I was coming back from the gym. Some dude in a GTI pulled up hard to the right of me at this light. Light turns green, and we both start off normally. Then, out of no where, he guns it. His car was loud as hell. I let him pass by then dump it into 3rd going at about 60. I never had a chance. He was walking on me the entire time. By the time we hit 105-110, we both slowed down, he was at least 4 car lengths on me. I gave him a thumbs up and turned off. GOD DAMN!T! I hate losing!

I'm no expert but they can't be. With no flame intended these cars come stock with 174hp and 181 ft-lbs of torque with a 2,930 dry weight. They may get you 0 to 60 or even in the quarter mile but when you get to the top end you should be able to blast them away he was definitely modded out.

Well, I know I'm not an "expert" stick driver, but I know how to downshift to third and mash the gas pedal in a relatively short amount of time. He just kept walking away from me. Musta been modded, but nevertheless, I lost. Oh well, what can ya do right?

I told you those things rock! You gotta have an intake and y-pipe if you are going up against a modded GTI VR6. Make sure all your windows and sunroof are closed and your climate control is off. If his car was really loud he probably had an exhaust and maybe an intake (at least a drop in K&N)....if that is the case he 99.9% chance had a chip too.

Just in case you guys didn't see this:

http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?threadid=44931

Don't give them any advantage at all by giving them a jump or head start. You gotta hit it from the start if you are going to beat one! Brother drop in a Y-Pipe if you are going to do any racing...think about the short throw shifter (definitely a plus!).

Don't look at mag numbers....trust me they are fast stock and very easy to mod. Their top end is where they will get us... I know it is hard to believe but trust me they will pull on you in 4th and I think their 5th would be a bit stronger too. Without at least an intake you will probably lose. No mercy with GTI VR6 is the lesson just drop it hard and don't even look behind or beside you!

they r that fast ... i lost 2 1 with exhaust about 3 times in row .. don't know about chip ..

Russ (black max with clear corners) thought that we'd have the edge at highway speeds & he got beaten as well ...

I won't make the same mistake twice ... never going 2 race 1 unless I get a SC

Don't be afraid of them! You have an intake so just throw down for a Y-Pipe and you will be fine! Your going to love your short throw shifter when you get it installed! Some good tires will help off the line big time too!

Yes they are, and they are VERY underated....like most German cars are. That car is fast, one walked away from me pretty bad on the highway.

Man! I checked on you guy's GTI info and it is true. I too will stay far away from the GTI. There is even a thread on the general forum supporting your case:

Ya man! That is about a 30HP gain. And from Dynos it is about 20hp to the wheels...that is significant...you now have a ~250HP car about 205HP to the wheels! In my opinion the short throw shifter will save you a .1-.2 depending on how many gears you go through as well.

Well now..

I don't feel TOO bad after reading some of your posts. F this. I'm gonna drop the SC and the Y-Pipe in by the end of sept. Then i'll be running about another 80 horses or so to the wheels. I won't ever underestimate those cars again

First off, you let this guy take a lead and you went into 3rd at 60mph, when you really should have banged 2nd since 2nd is good time atleast 70 in the 5th gen (I can do 65mph). To me, it sounds like you gave him a 1 second lead plus you weren't quite in the right gear. Those two factors could easily amount to quite a few cars. I don't even think I could catch a Civic Si by 100mph if I gave him a 1 second head start and the right gear. It takes a lot more time and distance than you think to make up a few cars from a roll.

GTI VR6s are quick? Sure. Have I been beat by one? No. I've had 3 encounters with them on and off the track and I've walked them and usually out launch them. I still haven't seen this "massive" topend power the VR6 is known for. The highest trap speed I've seen for a GTi VR6 was 90mph. I'm looking at Sport Compact Car and they dynoed a 98 VR6 with an intake and it put down 165fwhp and about the same in torque. When you team that with a 2800-3000lb weight, I don't see how these cars can be so threatening. If it has a cam, chip, and all the bells and whistles, then do worry, but otherwise, you should own him.

I agree with you on not allowing head starts and being in the best gear. I totally disagree with your comments on beating a GTI VR6...trust me I did many runs with one the other day and drove one for a while... they are fast and would pull you after 100mph and will have a better top speed. I don't care what the mags say run one with a basic mods like a chip and K&N and you will see like many others have lately.

Dave, 2nd tops out at 59 or 60 mph (And yes I had the rev limiter bouncing so I know). 3rd is the only choice we have. GTI'S are quick, if you thought I was fast, you should run my friend, he is faster in his stock GTI vr6. Also the 2001s are faster.

How is the GTI so fast? I know that it's under rated stock wise. How about the weight? How much does that factor in? I know they are lighter than a Maxima. I don't know how fast is a GTI, but I raced a chipped A4 1.8T, and that sucker was fast! Although at that time, I only had a CAI. I think I would still lose if I race him today. Hope to run into him next time so we can talk. And isn't the GTI cheap to get? Under $20k?

I sure hope you're not going into 3rd at 60mph. I know for a fact that when I'm shifting out of 2nd at 6200-6300 rpms, I'm going well over 60mph. If I hold on to 2nd till redline, it's right at 65mph on the tach. Andy B's website also has the topspeeds of each gear. I want to say the top speed in 2nd is 67-68mph.

As for the VR6s, I don't think they're underrated. I know the 1.8T was underrated by about 10hp, but not the VR6. I know there has been lots of talk in the VW crowd and even the mags about how close the VR6 and 1.8T are in power even though the VR6 was rated much higher in power. Like I've said, I've had 3 encounters with them and I'm sure they had atleast I/H since I saw the aftermarket muffler. TOday, I also rod in my co-workers GTI VR6 and he immediately admitted my car was quicker, especially in 3rd gear and 1st.

Those GTI's are nothing to mess with. I raced one from a stop and he was even with me until 70, then I slowly pulled away. I think the guy was chipped but he wouldn't say.

This makes no sense "GTI's are nothing to mess with" Well if this is the case how is he even with you to 70? I pulled on one (with chip and k&n) them in first and second so I guess you would get beaten by me too! 260HP...blah!

First of all I had two passengers in my car and 3/4 of gas in my tank. Second this guy was driving alone. Finally if everything was equal I would have beaten him by more. Like I've stated before I have beaten Max's from a stop and from a punch on the highway.

Hahahaha great! Would you like a cookie?

PS When I ran the GTI I had a FULL tank of gas, 4 people in my car and a piano strapped on the roof! Were the Max's you were racing going in the same direction?

Dave, do I need to take a picture of my car bouncing off the rev limiter at 66-6700 at 60? The car won't go above 60....

Also the Vr6 is alot quicker than you think, I willl still stick to my experience....2000-2001s are faster.

Hey LURKER! Congrats on your kill and enjoy it while you can because the 2002 models come out this fall and your demise is just around the corner when 260hp 3.2 liters 232 ft.-lbs of torque vs. 260hp 3.5 liters and 246 ft.-lbs of torque then we will see who's beating who.

He didn't beat anything other than his meat. Jokers like this wish they had a Max (why else would they be in here so much...I don't waste my time in Acura forms) or even Acura CL-S. His 1984 Honda Accord Pizza delivery car still can't get to me within 30mins. "Your late!" I guess he is sick of having to give away so many free pizzas especially to Max owners. If he had a CL-S he might be able to make it on time!

Why in the hell would I wish I had a MAX? If I wanted one I could have bought one I think my car does cost more. Anyway Acura is a more prestigious name than Nissan. The funny thing is that I can lay waste to any Max on this forum, that doesn't have turbo, supercharger, or nitro. So for all of you with your y-pipes, exhaust, and CAI bring it on.
