Yes... but the auto VQ30DE vs the auto DEK we see a larger difference in hp... (32) and the low non-adverstised but proven calculated crank#'s from the VQ35 vs the DEK is only 18 hp.. but stock for stock the auto 3.5L will assault the auto DEK.
In this particular case, torque pwns.

the vg hasnt been used in the max for a decade (the ve is a derivative of the vg).

ok, now that we have the engine code **** straight, how about a real answer. what are the pros vs cons of both versions of the 5th gen max's. I might be getting one soon. so i want to know
is the power difference really worth the extra price
are there any other differences between the two versions (good or bad)

In stock form, the 2002/2003 models are faster than the 2000/2001 models, but I think that the fastest Maximas are still modded VQ30 models right now. The VQ35 models will catch up when we get more aftermarket development, which looks like it will be here soon.
Personally, I'd still go with a 2002/2003 model if I had to make the decision again. As Hoooper mentioned above, another difference if you want a manual is that the VQ35 5th gens came with a 6spd manual while the VQ30 5th gens came with a 5spd manual.

SOME of the 3.5 engines have an oil consumption problem. my suggestion is to buy a 5 gen, and save thousands!!! i bought a 2k and for less than a thousand changed to hids, 2k3 front bumper and tails. imo that is the only place where the 3.5 accels over the 3.0, in the cosmetics. i don't care about the nominal diff in horse power as that extra power is not worth the extra 5-7000 dollars to me. I know many will harshly dissagree but in my mind i do have a 2k3 but for thousands less!!!! And with all the money i saved on buying the 2k i had enough left over to put entire stillen kit and rims along with many other mods and i'm still way under just the standard price of a base 2k3.

. I agree with every you said.
i was searching online last night looking at 5th gens, and it does seem that i can save from 5-10K with relatively close mileage by getting one with a 3.0. i noticed subtle differences in the body styling between 5th and 5.5 gens. the 5.5 does look better but i think i maybe going the 3.0 route unless i somehow find a 5.5 with really low miles to make spending the extra cash worth it
Correct me if I am wrong, but VQ30's have the advantage of having the option to turbo or supercharge and thats about it. There are headers, exhaust systems, intakes, and a various assortment of exhaust components available for both engine types. Both cars have notorious MAF problems, which can be replaced for 89 bucks (for the VQ35 you have change one sensor to make a 2k MAF work), some VQ35 and I mean a small number of them have oil issues, while some VQ30 have coil problems. As VQ35's become more popular so will the aftermarket scene. Plus you have the 6-speed option.
If I were you I would test drive both and see for yourself if the extra power in the VQ35 is worth it to you. Look at the interior as well since you will be spending the most time there. When I test drove both engine types I felt that it was worth the extra money. Just my $.02.

... Maximas have had the VQ since the 1995 model year, which was introduced in 1994.

for VQ35's
There is currently NO ONE who makes an S/C for the VQ35.
