I was doing about 80mph in a 75 when these guys in a late model Northstar Caddy were coming up on the side of me (fast)the race was on. I hit it, took the overdrive off and took it to 6500rpm in 3rd then clicked into 4th and up to about 125mph. The Caddy was not as strong as I thought it would be and died out at about 110-115mph. I had about 15 lengths on the Caddy by the time I ran into some traffic.

You toggled O/D @ 80 mph???? isn't that last gear range, even for a 5 spd? either way, I doubt the computer would switch gears if it wasn't safe...

anywayz good kill (for those of you opposed to the word kill. . . 15 car lengths is definitely a KILL in my book)

-Tom Z.

PS.. did anyone notice that Nissan redesigned their website... they now got a gallery of pics of 2k + 2k1 maximas... i might just go and put together a nice wallpaper from these one day..

GEAR RATIOS.....the auto has much larger ones....but probably still smaller than most american cars.

You can basically run any automaxima 89+ in 3rd gear up to ~115mph. 85mph in 3rd is right in the meat of his power band.

Believe me that was no kill! I test drove a couple Caddy's Northstars, (DTS and the STS) yesterday in the Cadillac Challenge http://forums.maxima.org/showthread....threadid=45090 and we don't have a chance against the Northstar! Not even with a five speed. Either he let up around 110-115 or his governor kicked in.

I agree with you on this for sure! A Northstar would rock a stock Max especially on the highway.

Ok someone please educate me on why it is bad to toggle the O/D switch off at 80 mph. What is O/D? I always leave mine on because it feels smoother so I figured that I better leave it on. Although I was taking to a coworker and his brother has a maxima that was in the shop because he always had the overdrive on.

U must be dreaming, but i think the caddy owner was minding he's own business, most(all) caddy owners dont race. I had a 95 STS, it has a 1/4 mile time of 14.6 and most importantly a 0-130mph time of 33 seconds, stock. Our maximas would be happy if we can do 0-130 in 45 seocnds.

it isn't bad at all, if you want to downshift to accelerate. O/D is OverDrive, just a technical/marketing word to say you have a top gear that is below 1.0:1 gear ratio, 4th/5th in autos & 5th/6th in sticks; usually at 0.70:1 or even 0.50:1.

there is no 3 notch, just PRND21. toggling the button to off would downshift faster than just flooring the gas pedal. your friend might have been driving in 4th gear (O/D on) at speeds of 30-45mph. turn off the O/D, at higher speeds reenage O/D.

Northstars make 275-300 hp, even at 4,000 lbs that should accelerate quickly. i.e., the Q45 has 340 hp & is faster than SE 20th.

He didn't race you.... Those cars whooped my 5th gen auto.... So I know a 5spd would have some serious trouble.

Ya I floored it which downshifted to 3rd then took off the overdrive so 3rd would make it to 6500rpm not 6000rpm which is what it shifts at with O/D on.

The Caddy hung on my *** till about 110-115 then I walked him. I think they might have a limiter but am not sure. I don't think he let off because I did not pull like he let off the gas. The Northstar is a fast car though.

As far as who was drining the Caddy? It was two guys in there mid 20's.

Well the Northstar is one sweet engine. Output is like 300hp give or take. I think maybe the kids were just seeing if they could hang or not and back out. Those engines are pretty wicked.

You guys are right after doing some research those Northstars are fast. The STS doing high 14's in the 1/4. They had to be playing with me.

my dad has Northstar (Seville STS)and I have taken it into the 150 range there is no way you could pull that. Keep in mind the SLS has a limiter at about 120. You may have pulled a limited version.

I'll bet it was a SLS. Autoworld has it at 7.7 0-60, 15.96 on the 1/4, and a top speed of 112mph. That would explain why I started to pull hard after about 110-115mph.

Maximam, When you made this post back in June I thought you were nuts and contested your claim but after a senseless race Sunday after I was cut off by one really HUGE guy in a STS I take my reply back. As I was in the fast lane doing 80mph he turns into my lane talking on his cellphone going about 60 and as I pass him he guns it. I did not gain on him but he didn't leave me either and by the expression on his face he was REALLY surprised. I got scared at about 115mph and gave up as we were approaching a curve and he changed lanes and left me as I approached traffic but I had to exit to go to work. I am now extremely pleased with the performance of my Max now and had no idea of how much power it had in the upper range other than reading about it here and due to never driving that fast in this particular model(I used to have a 4th gen). So to sum this up I now believe you.

Basically, here's how the auto-shifter works to the best of my knowledge:

Stick in Position 1: The transmission will not shift past gear one (it is locked in gear 1 until you shift up)

Stick in Position 2: Locked in gears 1 and 2

Stick in Position D w/ O/D OFF! : Locked in gears 1, 2, and 3.

Stick in Position D (O/D ON) : Normal driving, car using all available gears.

When you use the "O/D OFF" button: if the freeway is a little bit hilly, and you don't want the engine shifting 10,000 times every time you move the pedal 3 cm's, pop the O/D Button and the car will stay in 3rd gear, giving you more power.

If you're driving around in the city, you might want to leave Overdrive on, because you will certainly get better gas mileage. O/D OFF is kinda like more performance braking. The car will exhibit engine braking (the engine slows the car down a bit) on downslopes, which is easier on your brakes. On the Freeway, you should have OD ON unless you're passing someone or it's (aformentioned) hilly. If you follow kinda closely on the freeway, you should have OD OFF to give you better engine braking in the case that they brake suddenly! (to keep you from plowing into them)

Hope this helps.
