short shifter

im sure you guys will think this is a ridiculous idea, but if you wanted to make the shifter shorter (in height) so that it doesnt feel like driving a truck, would i be possible just to cut a small section out of the middle of the shifter and just weld the two peices back together?

I'm not sure about cutting and welding. But I would like for my shifter to be shorter too! I saw a guy the other day in a new g35 6 speed and I love the heigth of his shifter.

Yeah, what can I say. I dig it. My shifter reminds me of my dads F350 crew cab dually.

I don't know how durable that would be...maybe a better idea would be to cut it off (shorten) from the top, and get/borrow a re-thread tool kit and do it that way.

Any reason why you would want to cut it from the middle? Harvey (hct67) cut his from the top and also trimmed the reverse lock out to make it work. He epoxied the shift **** back on, but you could also use a tap and die set to rethread the shift rod.

And before cutting the shift rod, you should think about reducing the throw length either with the free STS or a Watkins. I don't see any good in having a short shift rod with the stock (long) throw length, unless you're only doing it for looks.

yeh, i didnt think about cutting it from the top and rethreading, i never think of the easiest way. i would definietely do the free sts, probly before doing this so i know what i really want in length. if its really that easy im surprised more people on here havent done it.

Cutting the shifter or the free STS?

People haven't cut the shifter because ergonomically, it might not be a good thing for most people who care about comfort. I'm pretty sure the height of the shift rod takes the height of the arm rest into consideration (or vice versa) and cutting it down may make for a little less comfort and more awkwardness when shifting. Just a theory of mine.

That and they don't like messing with the reverse lock out ring, because that has to be adjusted/cut as well.

Why not just get a short throw kit?

I guess in theory you could cut and weld...however the idea of rethreading the current stick would be better. Welds = weak points. If you drive hard that would be a potential hazard.

I say get a short throw kit, it can't be more than 250 or 300 bucks and is probably more like 180ish.

There is no short shifter kit that reduces the length of the shift rod for a 6 speed. The short throw kits that exist reduce the throw length while retaining the stock shift rod.

the FAST shift kit. its basically like doing the free sts. all it does is moves your shift cable. so save yourself the money and just do the free sts mod

I don't know what the FAST shift kit is, but isn't that what I posted? The only STS kits out there shorten the throw length/distance by changing the leverage point of the shift cable, just like the free STS, which I also posted about earlier in the thread. There are however, none that reduce the length of the shift rod, which is what 6SpeedTA95 was asking about.

I know what you mean with regards to the FAST shift kit... you are referring to the Watkins STS, and the site is www.fast-shift.com, but you still misunderstood my original point.

Hey guys, in regards to short shifts, what is available for the 03 max? Couldn't seem to find much while researching the other day. Only one I've seen is from custom maxima but they only ship UPS and since I'm in the great white north UPS charges too darn much for customs fees. I'm looking for a short shift with adjustment so I can play with the throw. B&M makes one for the 03 Altima which I thought kind of weird because I didn't know the Altima came with a manual shift.

I hate where the cupholders are, it's hard enough to drive with a drink in them, it would be even harder with a shortened shifter
