Abnormal Rear Brake Pad Wear

I replaced the rear pads for the first time at 62,000 miles. I used Bendix pads.

Now, 6 months later, I began to hear scraping sounds coming from the back. When I looked at the right rear outboard pad, it was completely worn down to the metal plate. The left side appears normal.

There were no signs of the brake piston not retracting because I never felt any pulling or resisitance when driving the last 6 months.

Does anyone have any idea whats happening? Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.

you have a piston that it is messing with you. Chack the seal around it and see if it needs to be flush...... or in need to a repair kit. Check also you E brake cable....

Thanks.

I never noticed that the piston was sticking.

However, I will take your advice and check the seal around the piston after I retract it back into the clyinder.

One last question, can or should I use a solvent like WD-40 on the seal?

Thanks for your advice.

Quick question, can the rear piston on the caliper be pressed in with a c-clamp, or does it spin into the caliper...sorry a newb question, I am working on my mom's 2000 SE, and saw the four slots in the piston and didn't want to screw anything up...any help is greatly appreciated..

Make sure that the tab in the brake pad fits into the groove in the piston. Look at it closely and you'll see what I mean. The piston has to be spun to the right position within the caliper before you put the whole thing together. It has to llokk like "+" and not like "x"

I think your got it right. I now know what you mean.

When I put it together, I did not bother to align the tab on the pads onto the corresponding grove in th piston!

I wish that the instructions stated that.

Thank for your advice.
