I've got a 3rd gen right now and I am thinking about selling it in about 6 months or so. I need a bit of info, maybe some pros and cons of the 5th gen and then I will probably post something like this in the 4th gen forum as well. I apologize if I have posted this here before in the past, but I can't remember

 

5.5th gen 6-speed.

 

I had a 96 5spd, a 95 auto, and now an 02 6 speed. I've only had the 02 for a week, and it isn't registered yet as I'm STILL waiting for the title. It's my favorite to drive so far, but I still love the way the 95-96 looks.

If i were to go back and do it again, i think i would have bought a 4th gen just because of the price...i mean, i like my car better in nearly every way, but i could have saved a LOT of money buying a car that's nearly as good...just my opinion..

The earlier 4th gens were fairly light and pack a good punch. If you wanted to mod it, ultimately it would be the faster car (VQ35 4th gen)

5th gens tend to have a bit more creature comforts and weigh more. Options such as heated mirrors, heated steering wheel, steering wheel controls, heated seats, etc etc etc

4th gens are nice and less expencive but they don't have the power of the 5.5 or a 6spd go for the 5.5

To Be Blunt: If you're looking to find something up to $6-7K you're in the wrong forum.

All you'll find is high mileage 5th gen (00-01) with basically the same engine as a 4th gen. I agree with LA02MAX, a 4th gen would've been so much cheaper. Not to mention there is a huge aftermarket for 4th gen that can have them easily running past VQ35's.

 

I've had just about enough of this 5th gen **** talk.

If I could do it all over again, I would have purchased a 4th gen. If you are big into modifying your car, you can't go wrong. There are always a ton of excellent parts for sale cheap in the classifieds section, and a wider variety of parts for the car. The seats in a 4th gen sit a bit lower to the floor, which, IMHO, is a bit sportier than the 5th gen.

DAILY DRIVER: 5th/5.5 gen
MODIFIED MAX: 4th gen

 

I got my first max back in November, I looked at and test drove both the 4th and 5th and liked the 5th a lot more. But you will definately be able to get a nice 4th gen with that money and you need decide what you like driving more. Either way they are both reliable

I've owned both 4th and 5.5 gen (which I have currently) and would say that if you're going for a more modded/sportier car go w/ the 4th gen and if you want more luxury sport sedan then go w/ the 5th gen. Both have a great engine and great body style but again, it all depends on your budget.

 

When I began looking for a Max to purchase last year, the first one that really caught my eye was a Arctic White Pearl 98 GLE from a small local dealership here in Racine. The car was sharp and only had 83 or 84,000 and change miles. It had beige leather interior with only one miniscule tear on the driver's side seat back. It had the 4th gen 5-spoke wheels and was real pretty. The dealer wanted $7500 out the door, but since the car was a Christmas gift from my fiance, she had input on the car to buy. We looked around and after two weeks, found the car I drive now:

I always liked the 5th gen style and was pleased when we found this car at a local Lexus dealer. The combination of black leather, black exterior, interior design and comparable mileage as the 4th gen helped seal my choice to go with the 5th gen.

My choice for you would be, if you can find a 5th gen in your budget, go with it; I think you'll agree. Good luck.

IMHO,

get a 5.5gen....cant go wrong with it. i was going for a 99 4th gen 5spd or a 5 gen 20th AE '01 5spd at first...but after test driving the 5.5 6spd, my mind was made up!!...yea i couldve saved some $$$ BUT NO REGRETS ON MY END.....I LOVE MY MAX!!!!!

 

They are both great cars. I would get a 5th gen just because I owned 2 4th gens.

from what I've experienced, the 4th gens more geared toward sport. smaller, more of a sporty feel. 5th gen more roomy for that luxurious feel. With a car seat behind my drivers seat, 4th gen, I'm kicked in the back. 5th gen, can't reach me. All this with my same ideal seating position in relation to pedals, steering wheel, etc. 4th gen and 5th gen have very simmilar engine/drivetrain (with same damn problems) sans variable intake on 4th gen. 5.5 gen has better engine/drivetrain.;

 

The best piece of advice I can offer is to test drive, and make a decision. I graduated from a 92 GXE to an 02 SE. I absolutely loved the body style of the 5th gen, and was hooked from day one. My ole lady's Mom purchased a 4th gen (95) brand new, and back then, I was very amazed at how much punch it had. I went out and test drove an 02, and that was it. BTW, I did test drive this car in 10 degree weather, with 3 days snow on the ground...

But at the end of the day, you have to get what makes you happy because the payment will be made by you. Ultimately, get what makes you smile!

 

on a budget, get a 4th gen. if you are willing to spend more $, get the 5.5 vq35. if you were going to get a 3L 5spd 5th gen, may as well get the same in a 4th. it's cheaper, and lighter.

 

5th generation I have them both a 2000 GLE and a 1998 GLE
5th is faster but 4th is not far behind both are faster than the third
even though the third has the exact amount of power as the 4th. The 4th is lighter. Working with your budget though I recomend the 4th not a 95 or 96
get a 97-99
If you want to spend more money though i recomend the older 5th gens because of the availability of performance parts

 

Why not get both? less than 20g total...

 

Simple, if you can't afford the 02/03 5.5th Gen 3.5L 6 speed buy a 97 or 98 4th Gen. Big difference between the two in many ways but not so much between 00/01 and 4th Gen's.

 

If I had to do it again, I would prolly get an '02 six speed. However, if you don't have the funds, and want to do some serious modding, I'd go with a
4th gen and have a lower payment, and mod with the extra money...

 

Get an '01 or if you can find a '99 SEL, get that. What does F5 do?

I couldnt agree more. Sidenote: The 4th gen is still the best looking Maxima to date IMHO.....but I'm lovin' the power of the my 5.5G.

I own a 96 and a 2k. I prefer my 2k and if I were looking to buy a used Maxima now, I would set my sights on a 3.5.

Basically, without doing much work on a 3.5 you will have a pretty reliable and fast ride. There are several easy mods that will give you a bit more power without sacrificing reliability. To make a 4th gen as fast, it will take some cash/time and mechanical ability.

I may well keep my 2k auto with 200k+ miles on it when my wife gets a new car, do a tranny swap and mod the hell out of it. The problem is that things break more frequently on older cars. If you've got to be going to the garage to get them fixed, that could be an issue.

Honestly, if I was buying now, I would probably buy even a 2k/2k1 over a 4th gen despite the fact that I think the 4th gen looks better.

Mother-in-law owns a 3.5 alti and its a nice car, pretty fast - they've basically moved it into the bottom half of the Maxima market - so not necessarily a bad choice.
