CEL on with P0420...NYS inspection concern!!

my 01 pulled a P0420 code, and i know about the three way catalyst TSB, the dealership wanted to charge me 200 dollars for the reprogram and i refuse to pay that much money for such a stupid repair, my NYS inspection is coming up and i was wondering if there is a way that the CEL can be bypassed so that i can pass inspection without doing the repairs?

thanks

The cel HAS to be off to pass inspection.

Get it fixed or fail, if it is just a reprogram; try and catch one of the techs and offer $50 cash.

Or maybe try an O2 sim and clear the codes?

even if the light is turned off by an OBD scanner the inspection system will still pick up the code?

Last I remeber, the computer "test" your system and it may force the code if there is a problem.

If you need to reset the ECU, just disconnect the battery overnight and see if the code comes back. If it goes for a week or two without a code, try the inspection.

This could possibly save your situation. When I was going for inspection I hade my SES light on for a P0430 and a P1320. The dealership couldn't figure out the P1320 and it gave them alot of trouble. Finally the code just went away. The dealership called me up and explained what happened and told us that NYS has an allowence for up to 1 emission problem. Because we only had the code for the 1 emission problem is was documented on the test but it was still passed. I am in NYS so I really hope that helps you out. This was last Nov, like 5 months ago.

that would only work for a visual inspection. Since NYS now has to connect your car to a computer and send out the test information, pulling the bulb will not change the fact that there is a code registered in his computer.

Thats why i have to re-connect my EGR...

My brother is a NYS inspector, so I dont ever have to worry about a visual inspection. Its the damn computer that gets me!

I still think a single output O2 sim will solve the problem...

Plus its only $25.

dealership told me otherwise...they said its a TSB, not a recall, so therefore i have to pay for it.

What he's saying is that the reprogramming is covered under the 8/80 long term emissions defect warranty. It has nothing to do if its a recall or TSB.

Contact Nissan of North America and ask them. I had a dealer tell me I had to pay for my TCM, I called them and found out it was covered, called the dealer back and had it done for free.

Go to another dealer, call Nissan North America, show them the federal emissions warranty terms, etc etc....
