how to change the auto headlight shutoff time?(for 02-03 only)
(for 02-03 only) i heard somewhere here that you can change your auto headlight shutoff time. i want to make it shut off right after i turn off the car. people always telling me my lights are on, or just want them to shut off since i go to some ghetto neighborhoods, and dont want to leave my lights on more than i have to. does anyone know how to do this?

but i would like to shorten the time on the timer tho...on my accord it shuts off after like 10-15 seconds but the maxima turns off like after 30 seconds or so. there a way to shorten the timer?

The Maxima shuts them off after 45 seconds, and it is not adjustable as far as I know. On my old Cadillac, you could adjust it from 15 seconds up to 1 minute. I actually like having the lights on for 45 seconds after I get out of the car. It lights up my driveway and front steps so I don't trip over crap on the way to my door when I get home from work at night.

Can't imagine why yours are taking so long..

Maybe it's different on the 2000/2001 model. I have a 2002/2003 model, and so do all the other posters on this thread.

Ok.
Automatic headlights are available on all 5th and 5.5th gen model years, as far as I know, but there is a slight difference in the behavior of 5th gen and 5.5th gen headlights when you shut off the car.
On the 5th gen (2000, 2001) auto headlights, I believe your lights should shut off when you exit the vehicle and close/lock the doors (I'm not clear on the exact details).
On the 5.5th gen (2002, 2003) auto headlights, the manual clearly states that your lights will shut off 45 seconds after you exit the vehicle and shut the door (it does not matter if the doors are locked or unlocked). Some of you keep saying that it happens after 30 seconds, but my car has always done it after 45, and the manual states that the timer is set to 45.

on my 2k my lights turn off right after i take turn it all the way to the off position thats if i have it on auto, if i have it on manual on then it'll turn off like 30-45 seconds? i don't know i don't sit there and look at it i jus accidently left it on sometimes

Just turn off the lights before you shut off your car. I always turn off my headlights when I enter my street and I leave my fog lights on since I already rewired it to the AC wire which shuts off as soon as the car goes off.

The auto light function of the headlights can ONLY be adjustable from the dealer with the CONSULT II. The earleir models (2k-2k1) are'nt adjustable. If the light switch is left in the auto function, the headlights will turn off as soon as the ignition is turned off. If the switch is in the ON position, the lights will turn off as soon as one of the doors are open. The later models (2k2-2k3), in the auto postion, the headlights wiil turn off after 45 sec. or so once the doors are closed or after ignition is turned off. If the headlights are left on at any time when the car is off (for all 5th gener's years), the battery saver feature wil take over and turn OFF all lights after about 10 min. or so.

An excerpt from an old thread, don't know if it's for 5.5s only, but I know it's dealer only, not DIY.
Headlamp Illumination Delay (time headlights remain on after exiting car when headlight is in the “auto” position)
Mode 1: 45 seconds
Mode 2: No Delay (lights turn off immediately)
Mode 3: 30 Seconds
Mode 4: 1 minute
Mode 5: 1 ½ minutes
Mode 6: 2 minutes
Mode 7: 2 ½ minutes
Mode 8: 3 minutes

ok (ahem) as a 2k1 owner (all 2k-2k1's), in auto mode my headlights go off as soon as i turn the key to the off position. If i have them on manual (only cool of u have a fog rewire may i add) i can take my key out and the lights stay on but they go off as soon as i open a door on the car.

5gen:
auto mode: off when car is shut off
forced on mode: turns off 30-45 seconds after you turn the car off. (if you have your doors rewiredfor the headlight delay mod) else they turn off when you open your door
5.5gen:
auto mode: turns off 45 seconds AFTER the door is opened, than closed, otherwise stays on until the door is opened and closed.
forced on: lights turn off 5 minutes after key is removed.
(the reason why the 5.5 gens do this is because of the HIDS. Turning HIDs on and off unnessicarily makes them go bad quicker. Nissan set it so that in most cases they wont turn on and off a lot esecially in the auto mode, 5gens are more indecisive about being on or off in auto mode in different lighting, 5.5 gens once there on you have to be in bright light for awhile for them to turn off)

There have been two instances in my 2003 where I had my auto lamps in the "Auto" position and the lights never shut off and after about 45 minutes had drained the battery. I don't know what caused this fluke, but now I don't trust the auto off feature, which is supposed to work after 45 seconds. Now when I park my car, I turn off the car and flick the headlight switch to off and right back to "auto" so they'll illuminate when I start the car. If there was a way for the dealer to change the auto-off time, I'd do it becuase now I don't trust my car to do it for me and it kind of defeats the purpose of having "automatic" headlamps.

It can only be done with a CONSULT II tool at the dealerships.
And 2K/2K1s need to stop butting in, because we have completely different lighting systems. My 2K3 HIDs turn off as soon as I turn off the car, but that's because I have a 2K1.

On my 2002 with factory HID, if I park the car and shut off the engine, the lights will stay on until the battery wear down protection kicks in. If the drivers door (only) is opened then closed, the timer activates for the 45 second light shut off. Eariler models with the halogen head lamps will shut off as soon as the engine is shut off.

Now, I know for sure your lights can be adjusted by the dealer with the Consult II because I've done it - mine were adjusted so they come on later (darker), and I also had the power delay adjusted. There was a thread around somewhere with all of the options that can be adjusted, I'll try and search.
