Maxima Taillights

I am looking to get the black colored se taillights for my 2000 Maxima. What year taillights will fit on my car(plug&play), 2000-2003? I have been looking at both of these taillights and was wondering what the difference between these are....is one a cheap ebay knockoff or something?

00-01 will fit no problem.
02-03 will fit no problem but you will need the wire harness.
Good luck

I bought these taillights today. They are from a 2000 se so they should just plug right in and replace stock w/o any connectors or mods? I like the look of these and haven't seen any around my...dunno why

Did any of the '02/'03 SE's come with the black tails? I just purchased a '02 and would rather have the black tails instead of the clear "Altezza" style. My car is black as well.

I think so....you can get some of the black se taillights off of ebay or just d a search on froogle. How much you looking to sell your altezza style tailights for if you find some black ones?

no, 02-03 only had the "altezza" chrome style, there was no black tail lights for the 02-03.

all tail lights from all years are interchangeable, but if you cross from 5.5 gen to 5 gen, and vice versa, you will probably need the wiring harness.

so nismo, if you want the black tails from the 00-01 SE, you need the wiring harness from those years as well.

You can trade em, that's what I did. Just make sure you swap the wire harness too.

I looked at 2k3max2nv's cardomain page, but did not see any wiring harness diagram. Is there a link that shows exactly what is needed to install 5th gen tails into 5.5 gen Maxima's?? Would realy like to swap out these clear tails.

Just look at the tails and it will be obvious.

Its like this:

Wires from car -> wire harness -> tail lights

Take the last 2 out from each car and swap em.

Information is much appreciated. I was confused because in most cases when wire harnesses need swapped it's more of a cut and splice ordeal. I was not aware that both the 5 and 5.5 had the same plug ends for the taillight harnesses to connect to.

Now to find a swapper...

You guys make things too confusing. I just ordered my black tails from South Point. I talked to Dave Burnette. He said you don't need to buy extra wire harnesses for the swap. When you remove the tail, the correct harness is already on it. The connection is the same. You only need the harness if it doesn't have any wiring on the taillight. One of the bulbs on the 03 harness will not fit in the 00 tail light. So if you meet someone in a parking lot and swap there are no extra harnesses to buy. So says Dave Burnette

That is correct IF you have an 02-03 and I have a 00-01 I have to swap my tails + harness for your tails and harness

I've red a ton of posts on this and it seemed to me that people were implying that anyone who did this swap would have to buy an extra harness. From all the talk I assumed that the tail light harness from an 00 would not plug into the wiring in my 03. And when I called Courtesy to order the lights they were going to sell me the tails and the harnesses. South point said it wasn;t necessary. More kudos for South Point and Dave B.

Not sure when I'll be getting my black SE's but when I do I'll have a set of chrome 03's for sale....Late next week maybe?

the reason we always bring up the harness is that a lot of times its difficult to find someone with tails to swap, so people just buy the tail lights...so we are making them aware that if you just purchase tail lights, you WILL need to buy a harness with them. if you go into a parking lot with 2 maximas and swap, the harness follows the tail lights. thats correct.

KC is right. Plus, when you buy the eBay SE tails, IIRC they don't come with harnesses, so that's when people need to buy the right ones from Dave B.

I've posted many times what I posted in #13 and #14 because people never understand what it takes to do the swap with someone else.

If you already have the the all red tails, you could just get crafty and paint them yourself. I thought about doing it.
