Exhaust Stinks

Does anyone else's exhaust stink when they floor it?? Mine smells awful, kinda eggy. It only does it once in a while, when it does my car doesn't pick up as fast. Anybody have any clues or same problems?

Its your main catalytic converter. Need to get it replaced. If you are under 80,000 miles you will fall under the federal warranty and can have the dealer replace it for free.

As far as not picking up fast, that may be a separate issue, but get the main cat replaced and see how it performs after.

My '99 cali-spec used to do that when I floored it. Then I put a test-pipe and y-pipe in.. Now it just smells like gasoline.

It may not cause the SES to come on. Is your Max cali for fed spec? I think there is a difference there that would cause the SES to throw a code or not.

This is WRONG! My 2004 4-Runner does the same thing and it deffinitly did not fail emission. Toyota actually has a TSB fix for it. BUT it does depend on the brand of gas you use. If I put Shell in it, it stinks really bad. If I use Mobile it doesnt smell at all. But there should be no connection between the smell and failing emission.

only a newbie would leave the car on idle and smell the muffler outlet....why would you want to smell exhaust fumes? wait nm dont answer that question newbie cause i dont want to know you answer cause it might cause me my IQ to lower down to yours.

to the question, my exhaust smelled really bad when i first put on my new exhaust. is your exhaust new or is it still oem? cause i know new exhaust smells bad for like a week or 2

Jacka*s..."rotten egg" odor is a tell-tale sign that your main catylst has failed or is on its way to failing. Sure the type of gas you use may have an effect on how fast it will fail.

Hit me back in about 50,000 miles when your main cat has failed. BTW...what is the Toyota TSB fix? New cat? Hmm....

Too Rich. its definitely the cat thats making it stink. this could be a problem of a bad cat, but could also mean that your car is running way too rich. either way, the cat either is bad now, or will be VERY VERY soon

Easy killer! Actually no the TSB is flush of some sort and I will post the link to the forum (but the site is down right now so I cant get on). But you were saying that if it smells than your cat is already gone. What I am saying is that mine smells (depending on the brand of gas that I use) and I still just passed emission in Mass, which the second hardest to pass next to Cali. emissions. So I dont think its correct to say the smell of your exhaust is a deffinit tell-tale sign that your cat is totally gone.

NewMAx, what brand of gas do you use?

It's on its way to going bad or is bad. Either way he should get it replaced. He is under 80K miles. The dealer will definitely replace it, if they put up a fight, he just has to put up a fuss about the rotten egg smell and contacting the BBB.

they used the OBD2 right? if so, then no wonder you passed. the computer doesnt take any readings after the main cat in which case the idiots working the machine dont have any idea about the cat being bad.
