Bad CV Joints?

The past two days (only twice) when I turned my wheel real hard to the left, I heard a really loud grinding/clicking sound from the front of my car near the wheel well it sounded and after inspection I found that when turned to either extreme nothing is rubbing the tire so I did some research and I guess that loud clicking I guess you could call it is possibly a bad cv joint(s)...anybody have experience with this or have to replace them on their car?

if so, do you know how much it costs and what installation involves? Thanks guys.

My wife's '91 Maxima does this exact same thing. Other than that the car is really smooth, and it won't make the noise if you turn all the way to the right. The cv boots are in good shape with no tears or cracks, so I don't know why the joint would have died. The car only has 67k miles on it.

mine's done it too....at only 50k, it's kind of disappointing....i've only heard it twice, knock on wood, but I know i'm going to need to replace something soon...could the fact that i haven't had an alignment since i lowered my car be the cause?

Get an alignment. You spend all that money lowering your car why would you not get a cheap alignemnt? You obviously know that you should and not getting it could cause problems.

It's not a money or knowledge issue...it's a time issue...when I do have a second of free time, i'm usually busy, and for some reason, ever since the hurricane over here, all the automotive shops (tires, mechanics, etc.) have been completely swamped and unless you get there at 6 am, you're looking at a 4 hour wait, which just isn't doable for me right now....

anyway, back on topic, I am thinking about just ordering all new axles from raxles and installing them myself...i've heard that they are very high quality and use really good synthetic CV grease....

If the CV joints are not making the noise all of the time, than it is not somthing that you need to rush out and replace (unless you are out flooring it around sharp turns, or doing 180s). Just wait untill you find some time and replace the CV joint(s) that are giving you problems.

Hmmm that loud clicking sound familiar in my brother's car (2000 Oldsmobile Intrigue). When he turns the wheel all the way it clicks realy loud. He replaced the axle twice already and bought a new strut, didn't help though. We still can't figure it out what might be causing this problem.

Are your CV boots torn with grease leaking?

Did you check the turn-stops?

Did you check for any foreign objects caught anywhere? (Seems like you woulda seen it by now though)

It sounds similar to the problem i was having with my car. Everytime I made a left turn I would get a grinding/clunking noise from the right side. I took it to one mechanic who couldn't diagnose the problem. The tire wasn't rubbing, the dust shield was out of the way. He finally gave up and recommended i take it to the dealer. So I take it too them, and after explaining the noises to them TWICE over the phone..they figured out it was a bad hub and bearings on the right side. Since i only have 55k, it was replaced under warranty. Damn it feels good to finally own a new car! Anyways, I would have that checked out as well, cause i've read lots of stories on here about pre-mature bearing wear out.

I could have bad cv joints but I really need to take my car back to the dealer. Originally I thought I had a wheel bearing problem but the dealer said it was ok and they replace the bump stop caps. Couple weeks later the noise came back so my friend help me check my breaks, cv boots, and struts. Everything checks out. I noticed the the noise gets louder when the I'm driving in wet weather. It could mean something is lacking grease, but I'll let the dealership figure it out. Just want to hang right turns without hearing any kind of weird noises.
