Tranny problem...stuck in gear.

Hey gang...wife jumped in the car this morning and it was stuck in 3rd gear. I turned it off, check the fluid level -- all good there -- and restarted it and got the blinking OD indicator light. I restarted it again and did NOT get the blinking light and the car shifted fine. Is this indicative of an electrical problem or could this be the beginning of the end for this tranny? My girl is an 01 with 105k miles on her. Thoughts appreciated in advance!
Peace,
srb

Is there a check engine light? I would check the TCM first.

Yeah, if the OD was blinking, there's something going on with the transmission. The transmission has diagnostic codes as well as the ECM. The only way to retrieve them is to go to the dealer. If it continues to act up, I would definitely go to the dealer and get it checked out. The transmission also has its way of resetting itself after a startup if something made it tripped before the car was turned off. Just as long as the OD doesn't blink at startups, you'll be fine.

Thanks for the thoughts...the car never gave a check engine code, only the blinking OD light and once I restarted it hasn't acted up since then. I'm going to keep a close eye on it and see how she does but for now I'll presume it was some weird one off.

Peace,

srbarnes- I had a similar prob like that before with my 01 AE ( auto ), didn't get the blinking od light though, but was stuck in 2nd gear, turned car off and started again and no problem since. I guess sometimes the trans can be reset by just restarting the car! good luck and hopefully it was just a fluke!

The answer to the original question is that the trans went into "limp home" mode. The TCM detected a fault. You need to have the codes read to determine what that fault was. Odds are it will do it again.
