Cleaning the engine from the inside...

Well, i was fixing my VIAS today and couldn't help looking behind my throttle plate. WHat i saw and felt with my finger was a horrible residue of oils, dirt and god knows what on the inside of my throttle body walls. I was going to change my oil today, but after i saw THAT!!! I decided to ask you guys if there's a way to clean that crap off before i change the oil ($50 for an oil change even if i do it myself). So please, is there anyone who knows how to clean that crap off. I am not only talking about the intake manifold, but also valves (eventough i always fill up with 91 Chevron), under the valve covers, the crank case, and god knows what else. I want to give my engine an all out bath, it deserved it. Thanks.

just run a oil flush that you can buy in any auto parts. Do a seafoam treatment and you are good to go.

An oil flush isn't going to clean the throttle body. Buy a spray can of throttle body cleaner (NOT carb cleaner), take an old toothbrush and clean it.

well, i'll reach maybe 4" inches past the throttle body, but look how long the intake passages are...

The best way to clean your throttle body passage is with one of those fuel system cleaning machines. It uses a wand to goes into the passages and flushes the gunk out into a rag.

For throttle body use one of those throttle body cleaners sold in parts stores. (get the one that says "safe for coated throttle bodies" just in case. To clean behind the butterfly valve, have someone keep the gas pedal pressed, don't push the valve directly)

Get Seafoam to clean intake manifold and cylinders. (there should be a writeup in fluids/lubricants section)

To clean engine internals you can either use AutoRX or one of those cheap engine flushes. (AutoRX, however, will do the job much better without any potential harm to the engine, here's some more info: http://auto-rx.com/)

just out of curiosity, why would it run you 50 bucks to change your oil yourself?

Dont even mess with using SeaFoam, I tried to see what this fuss was all bout here on the .org and gave it a shot on my engine. Results- inside of the intake manifold looked exacly the same way before SeaFoam as it did after, to me all it ever do was make a buncha smoke as the stuff burned off.

I would recomend using....
set up to spray in before the throttle body at idle. By doing so it will clean out your idle air control valve, throttle body, intake manifold and intake valves.
For doing actuall fuel injector cleaning...

This product is used with a special injection aparatus that hooks up directly to your fuel rail. It gets pumped through your injectors, cleans out the fuel rail and also dissolves deposits on your valves and piston tops to make the engine like new.

Gets dumped into your gas tank to clean out any nasty deposits inside your fuel pump, fuel lines, fuel filter and also does clean injectors but at a slower rate than having a fuel injection apartatus setup at your engine. 44K can also be used in conjunction with the apartatus setup at the fuel rail.

Pour this into your engine and let it run for 10-15 min- engine needs to be HOT. Might wanna rev it to like 2K RPM and let it run for 5 min at the very end of the cycle. This will wash off any varnish, slugde (to a point) from your engine. Afterwards you need to change the oil with your preffered brand.

I have given my Maxima a "BG Induction and Injection" service and the intake manifold is clean, and my idle air control valve got cleaned TOO GOOD (it failed right after all the carbon disslodged, and I repleaced it with a new one).

I have the MotorFlush stuff laying in my tool box at work, and I will give it a flush at my next oil change. BG stuff is HIGHLY regarded in the automotive servicing industry and ALOT of dealerships use their products even if they are more expenssive than others. They do what they advertise they do, and to me and my 150+K mile Maxima it means - better runing engine, greater fuel economy and most of all better performance.

If you need to see the "aparatus" I use to do fuel injector cleaning with, I can post pictures of it set up on my Maxima. Pics are not too great- taken with my camera phone.

hate to say it, but everyone I've talked to says to avoid those... something about melting. Besides, the basic generic filter does just fine and costs half as much...

as for the oil, go find a sale somewhere, autozone usually has a sale on synthetic, don't buy from a gas station.

Wow, I buy the 5 qt jug of Mobil 1 synthetic at Wal-Mart for like $20. Someone is spending way too much on oil changes.

It has to do with knowledge period, which is completely independent of the join date or post count.

i would not let anything fram touch my car, you can get an oem filter which is much better for cheaper than that. check the oil & fluid section for an excel sheet breakdown. i would definately buy the jug from walmart, i just didnt understand why it was running you so much. with the jug you will have a spare quart around just in case you need it.

So where does that leave me, Irish, Puppetmaster and Soonerfan?

Also try Sam's Club for oil. Even cheaper than wally-world!
