MAF screens??

Has anyone taken the screen out of the MAF?
I played around with vettes for about 10+ years and this was a huge DIY mod to the MAF on those cars. On a stock motor it would give a few extra HP. Most could see .1 or .2 gain in the 1/4. Not much, but hey it's something, and free. Has anyone done it here, and what was the result?

I have a 02 with the AM600 keep this in mind.

probly a bad idea seeing as how weak our MAF's are already.

Mine is out, but it was kind of an accident, and i dont have any problems with it out, i just clean the maf with electric parts cleaner every time i do an oil change or i recharge my k&n, i dunno if i felt or heard any change in engine performance and sound because it happened when i installed my short ram intake.

You are probably thinking of maf honeycombs, which are rather restictive. I am a DSM guy and this is a popular thing on them also. I don't know though that the light screen would have much effect on performance.

Take it out. anything between your cylinders and outside air is a restriction. no matter what it's "purpose" is.

No, the one's I"ve played with from my vette years have two sreens one in front, and rear of the sensor. They where to keep people from trying to clean them, ot touch the little wire inside. Other than that no function really. I noticed the Nissan had only one screen a before, but not after. Which lead me to think it was there for another purpose seeing as how if the purpose was to prevent touching they would have put two on the MAF sensor. I don't see why this would hurt but was wondering what the experience was from others.

Note on the GM MAF both screens do help.

I read that the screen there is to straighten out the airflow right before the MAF. Also, it's the last line of defense before debris could enter the engine.
