Clutch changing gotcha - bad ground equals starting problem
PLEASE ADD THIS 4TH GEN POST TO THE HOW TO:
Another starting problem-replaced just about everythinghttp://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=452286
If you change your clutch out and then have starting problems - it is very likely that you have a ground problem.
I changed my clutch a while back and have had an intermittent and bedeviling starting problem since. It turns out that even though everything went back together properly - I somehow messed up the ground from the tranny to the engine.
I'm not talking about the ground cables either - it is the ground that the contact between the bellhousing and the engine provides.
This problem is apparently pretty common with 4th gens (probably a lot more changed clutches there).
I don't know how to prevent the problem but take a look at the 4th gen post to fix it. You basically have to reground the starter and tranny.
I added additional grounds by running a 4ga 32" cable from neg battery terminal to 14mm starter bolt and 4ga 19" cable from a 12mmtranny bolt (connecting the tranny to bell housing) to the engine ground right above the tranny. (didn't have a long enough one to get to the battery).
