WOW 34mpg!!!

Yeah I was driving this morning never thought about this until the raise in gas prices and all. But anyhow I decide this morning with a full tank of gas in the car (not that this matters) to see what would be the avg MPG I could get driving to work today. I refreshed the console MPG reading and to my amaze was able to average 34MPG. Now this is the drive setting in order to achieve this.

U have to stay under or right at 2000 rpms (SUCKS!)
I was going between 60 to 65 mph@ 2000 rpms in 6th gear.

I am sure it varys depending on the speed and all but, just thought I would let u know my readings to getting 34MPG average. Yes my timing was set 2 degrees up. I know driving under these circumstances suck but, until people start boycotting gas this is how I will save on gas.

just to let you know that thing is very inaccurate...to calculate your REAL mpg, divide the total distance you drive by the amount of gallons of gas you put in next time....

Did you figure it by the milage divided by the gallons of gas you put in it (as mentioned above) or did you use the MPG gauge?

You can NOT go by the trip computer. It's not accurate. You must calculate the mileage yourself.

I understand the problems behind the inaccuraties, but mine dynamicly updates every like 1min or so. Weird, but I really thing it is working right.

That just means it's precise within the constraints of what it's able to do, but it's still inaccurate.

With my driving style, i see the gauge being 3-4mpg off (on the high side).

That said, i've managed as high as 29+mpg - calculating it the right way.

Even if this is true I still will take that over 21mpg.

30mpg on hwy is plausible, but 28 in the city is a BS.

34MPG. Just remember you are not dirving a Corolla. Do the math the proper way and don't rely on that guage. It's not completely accurate.

The trip computer in my car has always been pretty close to accurate. Granted, it has always been optimistic but it has been close. While 34 mpg may be high, I've gotten 30+mpg many times (calculated, not going by the trip computer). Yes, I was driving like grandma over 40 miles to and from work on the highway with the cruise set at 59 mph in 6th and not changing speeds for most of those miles but it is possible. Currently, I'm in the low 20's due to the fact that I only drive 4 miles to and from work and then do multiple short trips in my car each day.

oh yeah the trip computer is a joke, i saw 41mpg for a couple minutes one day haha...I wish.

Yeah just enjoy the ride :-)

I had a 97 toyota camry I4 before the max, and I would have to floor it most of the time just to go with the traffic flow haha. then i moved onto the maxima and its a totaly different story, I have learned to drive slow, but i still get that feeling where i wanna step on it

Things I'd check if you are getting poor gas mileage in no particular order... MAF, coils, tire pressure, grade of gas, air filter, vacuum leak, oil level / oil consumption, O2 sensors, etc. Lots of things will degrade your mileage but the main one, I've found, is purely city driving. I cut my mileage almost in half on a tank if I do 90+% city driving with lots of stops and starts, lots of short trips, and lots of rolling stops.

shift sooner?

it really depends on the way you drive too....

if you like to slam the pedal on the floor welll then you should be filling up more often than usual

Agreed.

Also, to those with a 5th gen manual. The 5th gear isn't as high as is the 6th gear in the 5.5th gen. As such, the mileage will always be lower given the same speeds / conditions assuming each uses their highest gear. At least that has been what I've seen on this forum. I have to say, I enjoy the fact that I have 2 overdrives!

how many freaking gas mileage threads do we have to have? yes 6-speeds get MUCH better highway mileage than autos....DUH!! They sit under 2500 rpms at 80 mph....yes, they can easily get 30 mpg on trips...no there is not necessarily something wrong with your car if you get 18 mpg....it depends on the driving conditions and the way you drive....search and you'll find answers for EVERY single question in here...
