Starts then dies unless I put it in gear
I've been noticing some sputtering starts in the past few days on my 2000 max, and today just during my lunch break when I started it, it would rev up to 1k rpms, then die down quickly and the engine would die. It did this two or three times until I started it, then QUICKLY put it in drive, and it stayed alive and drove without a problem. Could this just be dirty battery terminals, or... well I like to start with the easiest possible solution.

I have almost the same problem with my 03 maxima with a 3.5. If it sits for about 45 minutes or longer it takes forever to crank back and sometimes dies. Nissan dealer cant figure it out. MAF, Throttle Chamber, fuel pump, regulators, CT sensor and air filter have all been changed but no progress has been made. After the pump was replaced it worked great for a few days and then starting messing up again, I took the pump out and looked at it and it worked a few more days and then started acting up again. If anyone has any suggestions let me know.

Same here. Engine revs up higher than usual (to about 2k) then drops to about 600 like it's about to die, then comes back up to 1.4k. When it was cooler outside it would stall out sometimes , but that didn't happen in a while. I think it works better when I turn the ignition on, without starting the car and wait till the fuel pump primes, and then start the car.

I have the same problem, except my car is stick shift. When I start the car it works fine but when i drive it, it stalls sometimes in neutral. I cleaned the throtlle body, it helped a little bit but the car still stalls. It does not however stall if i put the heat on the windows on. Can anyone telll me what i shoudl do. I have a 2000 maxima gxe.

I dunno, Ive been told that it might be the 02 sensor, have any of you tried replacing it? And the weird thing is that the car stalls when it feels like it. One day it might drive without stalling and an hour later it might stall everytime i put it into neutral. Its just annoying to drive. Im trying to get it fixed.

Well, I have horrible gas mileage (around 12mpg), but I attribute it to the fact that I drive 2-3 miles a day in Brooklyn traffic and most of it looking for parking. Btw, I have a torn exhaust ground and I read somewhere that could hurt the gas mileage due to lowered O2 sesor readings. Just out of curiosity, anyone else has that?

I'm having the same problem to. Sometimes my car will go for days without stalling. Then all of a sudden, on ramdom days it will die when i'm idle on drive or when i put it on park. I've had the throttle body cleaned but hasn't changed anything. I own a 2000 Maxima GLE

in most cases that i have heard about this problem or have come in contact...the best case scenario is it is the MAF or a Faulty new MAF the worst case scenario to fix this problem is replacing the computer...yeah it hurts

Got my money on the MAF sensor. That sounds exactly like what happens when the engine starts getting funky readings from incoming air. The air/fuel gets all fubared. might want to try cleaing it. see if it gets better. If it does then just go ahead and replace it. I cleaned mine and it ran great but only took about a week before symptoms started reappearing. I am going to just replace it. Good luck.
