Well, a whining sound (like a supercharger on a Cobra Mustang) is coming from the front end of my car. When I open the windows all the way down while driving, it sounds *like* it's coming from the driver's side, however when I have the windows up, I can't tell where it's coming from.

It's not belt or timing chain because it's speed related, meaning that when I shift gears, the pitch does not go down. In other words, as speed increases, the pitch of the whine increases.

Here's a small fact, my passenger side axle seal is leaking slightly.

I called up my Nissan mechanic and he says it might be my brakes. A while ago, I think Irish posted something about the dust shield rubbing on the brakes causing vibration or noise or something. So it could be it.

Help?

 

I had a winding/whining sound and it turned out to be the transmission bearings. They were worn to **** and I had to have them replaced.

Gez, my worst nightmare. I have to take the tranny apart now. Dammit.

 

heres another clue. When im in 2nd gear WOT and I take it up to 6000rpm and then while im still in gear, i let go of the gas, the whining goes away 90%, you can still kinda hear it in the background though.

 

just the whistle of the intake...no need to worry, my car has done that ever since i bought it....it's very hard to hear under 3000 rpms, correct? That's because the air isn't rushing into the intake as fast....

 

nope, trust me, it aint intake whistle.

its a LOUD whining. if you have a manual tranmission car and you put in in reverse and you go, it sounds like that except it happens when you're going forward.

 

That is exactly how I would describe the symptom I had.

Find a trusted shop. Get a bearing and race kit (not sure how much). They will have to drop the tranny and replace the bearings, races and seals. It will NOT be cheap.

 

Yep, it's most apparent in low gears and during acceleration.

 

Progress, how much did you pay for the rebuild?

 

Well, the AAMCO I took it to sucked azz and they had the car for much longer than expected. It was NOT a trusted shop. I believe the parts were around $300. I had an extended warranty when I had the work done so I didn't have to actually pay the bill. I believe my warranty paid around $1,200. Maybe it was more than that, It was this month last year, I should remember. Most of that is an inflated due to them sucking azz. I'd get quotes at shops near you for the job.

 

grant you might as well go get a fully rebuilt tranny. Yellow page a place called engine world, you can get a rebuilt one for about $900 dollars plus a core, with a sixth month warrranty.

 

really? rebuilt as in with stock parts or stronger-than-stock parts?

$900 doesn't sound bad. but the thing is, I want an aftermarket clutch with aftermarket flywheel.

 

Then tack on another $300-400. I see no reason why you'd need a whole new tranny if there is no damage. With mine everything was intact except the bearings. Keep in mind you'll have to pay someone to do the work if you can't do it.

 

is it that hard to do?

I have 2 Nissan mechanics availible at my service. I know them both as friends. Turbo95Max can most likely do this job too. But I've heard people taking apart their trannies and replacing clutch and flywheels by themself. All I'm scared of are the small parts within the tranny that I can damage or lose. But otherwise, I can afford to keep my car in the garage for like 3 weeks and work on it little by little.

 

Do that, then. The confidence and pride you will gain by taking on this task yourself will be 100x greater reward then the scratch you'll save. Good luck, my friend.
