5th gen MT tranny question.

I want to buy a new tranny 5-speed for my 2k.

Looking for a 2001 5-speed tranny with LSD (VLSD i believe)

Now I'm on Car-Part.com and I see 2 options for 2001 tranny:

M.T., non-locking differential
M.T., locking differential (20th anniversary edition)

I'm kind of confused because I thought the AE ones came with LSD's whereas the regular ones didn't.

Doesn't non-locking mean it DOES have LSD? And locking means it DOESN'T?

hey maxboost...i dunno if this is actually an option for you...but i30ds did a 5spd swap with a VLSD tranny...and he actually bought it BRAND NEW from Nissan for only $1700....yes, it's a pretty penny....but you told me how the local shop was gonna rebuild your **** for $2000 parts and labor....so I'm just sayin, if your planning to go ***** out, I say just get a new tranny, with a VLSD already built into it...

heres a link...this is a DaveB price...you could possibly get it for a little cheaper if you prob gave him a little nudge nudge

btw, If I was working as hard as you are, I'd definitely consider only buying the best for my maxima...and a new tranny would be something I'd consider for sure...i mean, your planning to go vq35, turbocharger, and all the goodies...might as well slap on a brand new tranny with some raxles...good quality stuff mang

ugh.

the plan:

1) 2001 tranny with VLSD
2) stage 1 or 2 clutch on light flywheel
3) supercharge
4) VQ35 swap
5) supercharge the VQ35
6) buy your headers

sound legit?

i totally understand....i'm just giving you an alternative option...i mean $1700 for a BRAND NEW 0 miles tranny with VLSD, isn't that bad if u ask me...considering shops will charge u sometimes $2k+ cuz removing the tranny...cracking it open...and replacing all the parts...then putting it back together and mounting it on the engine...is alot of work....where as $1700, u put in a BRAND NEW tranny...and bolt it on and GO!

fasho.

I have second thoughts on rebuild because if mech screws up. i have to rebuild it again and so forth.

so used tranny is for me. plus it comes with warranty. and then i can crack it open to replace the clutch and stuff myself and do 2-wheel burnouts!

dont want to jack the thread but do the 5th gen 5 speed trannys have the smame problem as the 4th gen ones, the bearings being overloaded and failing? something to consider, also why dont you just save for a 5.5 gen instead of swapping one in?

IIRC, you only have to replace one of the axles to swap into a VLSD (passenger side I think).

I thought you can use the same axles.

nope, the bearing issue is rarely if ever seen on 5th gens and they also have a stronger 3rd gear. You stand a better chance getting them with less miles than a 4th gen tranny, i see no reason to get a 4th gen tranny nowadays. Risks outweigh the cost.

guys check this link out.

you 2000-2001 5-speed owners should know that our axle bearings our overloaded from the factory causing premature failure.

why would you want to supercharge your vq30 then do a vq35 and try to supercharge that? wouldnt you just want to stick with one or the other?

well the supercharger kit comes with charge pipes for VQ30 so its just bolt on and play.

i want to play around with my stock motor before messing with the other one because i have to make mandrel bent supercharger>intercooler>BOV>TB piping.
