How do you know if you need more freon? My joint just blows out coolish, warmish air......not warm air. And my fans work

Newer cars like ours don't use Freon, it's R-12. GO to your local Walmart or autoparts store for an R-12 refill kit. Comes with a meter so your can check if your coolant is low.. if so refill. If not, then it may be your compressor OR you may need a flush. Don't quote me completely on that but those are the possible scenerios as to what's wrong.

OR JUST SEARCH

ya.. its r134a... though research shows that the reason for switching to r134a might be bad because r12 showed up as not as harmful as originally thought to environment.. also, there is a specific amount of refrigerant that is supposed to be in your system.. too little or too less will cause the compressor clutch to not engage..
btw.. freon is a manufacturer brand name for r-12
they are all REFRIGERANT

Air refridgeration systems are a closed system, so if you have lost coolant then you have a leak (granted that the leak may be so small that you only need a "recharge" every few years and isn't worth fixing). Buy a kit at autozone and check your pressures. If they are off, then adjust accordingly.

R12 is rediculously expensive (I think it's come down in price in the last few years, but it used to be $80/pound) and is illegal to vent to the atmosphere as it supposedly depletes the ozone layer.

Is it cheaper to just take my car to the local shop and fix my ac? Or shoukd I take it to the dealer? I have an extended warrenty on my max, so I'm pretty sure that this ac problem is covered under it. But my question is should I take it to the dealer? They charge $100 an hour.....so if its cheaper to fix my ac at my local shop, I might as well take it there..am I right? If it is a problem with my compressor, how much does that cost to get fixed? If a recharge is needed, how much does that run? I'm trying to avoid the "stealership" but if its going to be costly at my local shop, then I guess I have no choice but to take it to the shop. Please answer thos questions for me. Would be very appreciated. Thanks

If your car is still covered under some sort of warranty and the problem is that your AC equipment is faulty, it should be covered, but if it's simply a matter of it needing to be recharged, that will end up costing you money out of your pocket. You should maybe have someone look at it before making a decision on where to get it fixed if you're not exactly sure what the issue is at this point.

I know money is going to come out my pocket but I'm asking if its less then $100 to recgarge my ac, then I might as well take it the local shop, rather then paying $100 to the stealership. I asked if anybody knew how much it is to get a recharge, and how much a compressor is. I'm trying to find a spot that can check it for free in ny long island, but I can't find any place.

If you have the extended warranty you only pay your deductible which is $50.
If it is just a recharge that should be free.

lololollolol

I took my car to a local car shop and he stated he will charge me $85 to do a 20 min recharge. I guess I will just travel to my nissan stealership and get it fixed there. Also......if my deductable is$50, and they charge $100 an hour.......all I pay is $50?

You should only have to pay the $50 deduct for the part and labor IF it is covered under the warranty. I just took mine to Continental Nissan in IL. Found a leak in a hose that needed to be replaced. They kept my car for a few days till the part came in. Fortunately the extended warranty covers rental.
