Broken Fogs....again

So after having a cracked passenger fog for over a year, I finally bought a new one for $75, then I also bought the 3M light protectant film for $20 something. I bought new SuperPlasmas for $50ish.

I just installed the new passenger light and applied the protectant crap to both lights. Not one week later, my drivers-side light cracks!!

I was so pissed...for 1.5 years I've owned the car the drivers light was fine, then as soon as I replace the passenger light, the drivers one breaks. I do not feel like spending another $75 on a new light. I know some people put in plastic (rather than glass like stock) aftermarket lights that fill the hole very nicely. What brand are those and model number if possible?

Thanks guys.

EDIT: Oh yeah, don't waste your money on that 3M crap, it doesn't work!

PST...from what i gather...the piaa bulbs kill the factory fog lights...somthing about no having enough room so the heat builds up and thats that

Yeah, thanks, I know all about that, but the thing is, the driver's light was fine for a while. Unfortunately, the superplasmas are the closest match to the factory HIDs without actually buying HIDs.

But if I replace the fogs alltogether with some plastic ones, then I guess I won't have to worry about the PIAAs getting too hot.

Go to autozone, pepboys or whatever and buy aftermarket fogs. Take the OEM's out, use the bracketry for the new ones to ghetto-rig it in there, cut the OEM wires off the OEM fogs and re-use the plugs and away you go. For about $40 you can get better, longer lasting fog lights than stock. Trust me, after spending around $250 replacing Nissan fogs, I got fed up with them and just bought new.

$250? What did you have, like 4 broken fogs?

Which brand and model aftermarket fogs did you get that fit the space well?

EDIT: Nevermind, George, I see the CyberWhites on your cardomain. I'm hoping the set I buy actually gives me some more useful light, too, because the factory fogs don't do ****.

hid fogs > 2 oem fogs + 2piaa bulbs. not trying to rub it in, but for the future ppl may want to get hid kit right away instead of spending money on super hot piia bulbs+cost of replacing busted fog lights.

You know I was driving on the highway about a week ago, the same route I take every day and the traffic slowed down to a crawl probably about 25-30mph due to some construction trucks doing road repairs. About a 1/4 mile from the on ramp was a guard rail with slight damage to it so I was just looking at it and to my surprise I saw a 5th generation from bumper behind the rail with the driver's foglight and markers still in the bumper. I am not sure if the passenger fog is intact because of the position of the bumper. I was debating on whether or not I should stop by there one of these nights and pick it up and salvage the foglights and markers. It's been sitting there for about a week and a half now and it's still there last time I checked this morking. I believe no one has noticed it especially other maxima drivers because driving at 65+ mph you would not see it unless you knew exactly where to look. TheBigDu if you lived in Massachusetts I woul tell you where to go to pick this up. After all it's wont cost you anything and after reading about your experience with a cracked fog I just might go and get it to have extras on hand just in case. Oh by the way instead of buying a new for why not try to find one at the junkyard. It might save you some $$ unless you perfer a new one.

It's the bulbs. Keep OEM bulbs and you'll be all set. I had a cracked one from PIAA. Went back to stock when replacing fog and no cracks. Keep those aftermarket bulbs out of your fogs.....

All of mine cracked with OEM bulbs. It can also be road debris. Just buy aftermarket and don't look back. I went through several cracked housings before I got smart.

the only times my fogs have cracked is when they weren't on...the heat does have something to do with it, but when you have a glass object that close to the road, and you're going 80....well, you get the picture...

there was a rock rattling around in there, and this happened on a road trip home without using my fogs...

I disagree with the heat not cracking the lens. My lens cracked one rainy evening coming home from work. And my foglight bulb blew so I know for fact it was the heat that cracked the lens and the rain that killed the bulb.

well i'm not saying that the heat has nothing to do with cracking them, but most people on the .org play it out that it's the ONLY thing that causes them to crack...i've had super plasmas for almost 2 years, and my foglights haven't cracked once while they're on...i've used them in the rain and what's considered cold in the south (like 40F..haha) and the only times they've cracked is when i'm driving on the interstate, and they've always been off...I think that the heat does make them brittle, and if it's cold outside, they can crack very easily but as i said before it's not the ONLY thing that causes them to crack...

Yeah, I considered HID fogs, but instead of spending $250+ for the conversion kit, bulbs, etc., I decided to just take my chances with the replacement stock light and PIAA bulb. Unfortunately, that didn't turn out too well, but I won't go back to stock bulbs because they don't match the HIDs for ****, which is exactly why I got the SuperPlasmas in the first place. And I don't feel like buying another glass factory light, because chances are it will crack again, regardless of which bulb is inside.

I know the 2000/2001 lights had plastic lenses; does anybody know if they fit the 02/03 Max decently?

Bump....Ive been using the Super Plasma GT-X for a while now (1.5 yrs) and both my lenses have cracked. I leave the foglights on all the time. However, I have Lamin-X film on both lenses. The bulbs definately have something to do with the lenses breaking. The PIAA bulbs burn hotter than OEM bulbs. The Lamin-X film has started to turn brown from the heat coming from the bulb. I replaced the film on the passenger side, but now have to replace the drivers side. I also applied a rtv sealant/waterproof made by Permatex to the rim of the lens to keep water from trying to get into the cracks not covered by the film and so far it has worked to keep water out. I recently purchases a used set of GT-X bulbs since one of mine blew, so until these things blow again, I guess Im going to have to purchase more Laxin-X for a semi-perminant fix til the film turns brown again. Not sure what I'll do then. Possible aftermarket fogs, but probably not hids because of the cost. Hope this info helps.

I believe someone up here already tried. It dod not work for him. It had something to do with the back of the housing being different from the 02 version.

How about the fog/driving ligts being sold on ebay. It is possible that they now come with plastic lenses instead of glass.

I've done replacement OEM and the ebay versions. Do not buy the ebay ones!! They are made from cheap glass. They cracked the day I put them on with PIAA bulbs.

I've checked into the Titan/Armada Fogs and they seem like they might work with a little modification to the mounting area behind the fog and then using a different plug. I've read on the Titan boards that you can pickup the connector from any Saturn wreck. I guess it works.

I'm just waiting until I have a few moment to test out the fogs.
