Yes, he was racing because he tried twice.

A V6 Passat can only hang with a no skills driving Max.

They're actually throwing a 290HP "W8" engine in the Passat in another couple of months or so. (no typo, two narrow angle "VR4's" put together to give you a W8). I forget the displacement and exact HP numbers, but I think it was something like 290HP or so. The Passats with this engine will all be equipped with "4Motion" or the VW version of Audi's Quattro, so they'll be even heavier than the existing Passat. They'll probably be fast, but slowed down a lot by excessive weight so they probably won't be THAT fast. They're also going to be priced around the $40k mark (A 40k VW ???????? )
I forget where I read all of this...it was probably http://www.vwvortex.com I went back to try and find the article but I couldn't.

Remind me not to try racing that version in the future. Unless, of course, if I have boost.

Rumor has it that the 1.8T engine in the 98-01 Passats were REALLY 170HP and not the 150HP that they were speced at. Many people and even mags reported that the engine felt like it was a lot more than 150HP. I've *heard* (not seen) reports that someone dyno'ed their 1.8T Passat with 150HP, but got that much at the WHEELS, indicating that the engine had much more than 150 SHP. The conspiracy theory is that VW speced the engine at 150HP so as not to upset Audi A4 drivers with only 150HP, or 170HP in the 2k1 A4's, even though the engine was probably putting out 170HP the whole time.
The new Passat's (2001.5) are even heavier, and the new 1.8T engine is now speced at 170HP, but who knows what it's really putting out. C&D tested a 2k1.5 1.8T/5m with 7.5/15.7 0-60/ET times, which is enough to beat the Accord V6 and make an interesting race for an automagic Max stock vs. stock.
The new Passat's also keep the same 2.8L 190HP V6 as the old one, but with more weight they probably will be a bit slower as well.
Passat "core dump" now completed
If you roll down your window to talk to a Passat driver and he gives you a funny look, just point and laugh because he probably can't roll down his damn window because the window motor broke!!! (a major problem on Passats - anything electronic!)

Thanks for the informative post, Steve. Your research is much appreciated.
Thanks, but who said it was me?
Yes, I need boost to play with the bigger fishes. I'll be R&D's a kit tonight (with Jane's hairdryer) and will be prototyping it tomorrow after work. Hehehe
I might bring it up to 33 psi if I can attach my tires to the throttle body.
Thanks, but why would I exceed the speed limit? I am a law abiding citizen.

Not quite. The big underating comes from the 2001.5 1.8T. It's rated at 170 HP, but it really is 180. You basic premise about not upsetting Audi owners is correct. There was a story about this on the Vortex in March.
I like VW's, but I still am concerned about the reliability. (Terrible 2 year warranty as well.) If they could mate the Maxima engine to a VW interior, I would be happy. They're not rated too highly in Consumer Reports. Warren Brown from the Washington Post has received quite a few complaints about reliability. Check out this week's online dicussion. http://discuss.washingtonpost.com/wp.../brown0618.htm Who's going to pay $40 K for a VW?? I've been debating that on the Vortex.

And the 01.5 1.8T's are rated at 170 but are really 180HP?
Just to protect the ego's of Audi A4 drivers? Sheesh.
Well A4 Quattro's are already slow enough, so why didn't Audi just put in the higher boosted "Passat-version" 1.8T engines into the A4 to begin with and then they wouldn't have to do any derating to begin with.

They're not rated too highly in Consumer Reports. [/B][/QUOTE]I like VW's too, but it really is too bad about their reliability problems. I considered a Passat, but all of those problems combined with a crappy sub-standard warranty and VW dealers poor reputation for service is what kept me away from them. I hope they get their acts together though.
Ironically, Audi's are much more reliable these days than VW's, even though they share much of the same hardware. And service is much better (from what I've read) at Audi dealerships than they are at VW's (much like Nissan service vs. Infiniti service I guess)
Supposedly the "new" Passat is supposed to be much more reliable, but I guess we'll find out on that one...
