Too much oil?

HEy guys.. i had a shop change my oil before i took my trip to Tennesee a week and a half ago. I decided to check my oil to see where i was at. It is in the garage and the engine hasnt been ran all day. I pull my dipstick to see that its way past the H line.. near the first bend in our crappy dipsticks. HOw bad is this? I asked a friend and he said that too much oil can cause high pressure and the oil would start leaking in places but he said since u made the trip down here and nothing has happend then u should be fine. My car has never leaked and is fine right now. Should i be worried? I have to make the trip back to jersey in a few days.
All feedbak is appreciated.

Having too much oil is almost as bad as having too little oil...the pressure can break your gasket and that = major repair

5th Gen Max's have horrible, I mean horrible dipsticks. Mine showed "high" even though it had the right amount of oil. It's rare that a shop will put to much in. That's to much of a liability for them. Only way to accuratly know how much is in there is to drain it and see.

Depends on the shop, a 16 yr old kid working at jiffy lube getting paid minimum wage could care less if your car takes 5.2 liters. They just shoot for 4.5-6l . A tech that has a career and family and real bills hopefully will take a little more pride in their work.

You gots to double check the oil level after getting it changed by someone else, even if it is a shop.

I would go back to the shop and have them drain some. Of course it's almost imposible to do this without making a mess, so they will have to drain it all & give you fresh oil, so you get a sudo engine oil flush.

Don't let them tell you its ok to have that much oil in your engine in order to save the trouble & the oil. Oil isn't expensive especially when you buy it by the hundreds of gallons.

i had a really nice shop do mine, they came out and admitted to a slight overfill, and drained a little. I think when your car has higher miles on it, it may actually be good to have a little more than reccomended, especially if you're worried about the oil burning issues popping up every so often. also, if your engine's running strong, having a little too much oil (less than a quart extra) should be okay, and worse thing would be a little loss in power because of the additional hydraulic pressure. when i change it myself though i always used the Mobil M108(reduced clearence) oil filter and exactly 4.5qt of Mobil1 5w-30. I'll drive 5,000mi or so, but i keep an ear to my bonnet and if i hear my lifters getting loud, i'll ad some oil or grab some lucas oil stabilizer.

i've overfilled at work before; just drain, and stick drain plug back in place. ur hand will become a mess, but that's about it. u can wear gloves if you wish.

but yea, i hate these dipsticks too. i believe mine went over the 'H' but i put in specifically 4.5 qts, so i'm know i'm good.

Make sure you check your spark plugs, as long as they are dry then you should be good. If oil gets past the O-rings then you could be in trouble.

I just had my g/f oil changed at Firestone and they did the same thing. i had them flush and fill my oil and check the spark plugs, also got 2 free oil change coupons. I appreciated the coupons, but messing up my engine is too high a price to pay for a free oil change.

I've always put 4.5qts in my Max since I have a seeping lower oil pan, around 2K miles I am down maybe to like 4.3qts and at 3K I'm at 4qts- due to my oil pan. I repleaced my lower oil pan a long time ago, and the silicone I used (honda stuff) needs to cure for almost 48 hours to get a good seal. I let it sit over nite and it ended up seeping a lil bit. Doesn't bother me, I know that it doesnt burn any oil.

i put 4.5, it burns .5 in 10k (syn) and then i add the difference at some point.

my dipstick is quite accurate from what i hear.. odd. anyway, if they put in 5 quarts you will be fine. 6 i would worry about.

Spark plugs look dry, but I'll have someone drain some oil out. Probably won't be going back to that first shop though.

you don't want to fill it to the point that it blows out the rear main seal.

from my experience with the DE, once the oil is at the bottom line one quart will get it pretty close to the full line.
