Belt Replacement Guides and Suggestions

I need to replace the belts on my 2k GLE Max. I'm at around 80k and Its been suggested by several places to replace it soon. I've purchased the Belts from Dave in TX a while ago but now I'm questioning if I really want to do it. Only write up I've seen the pictures are no longer valid. Anyone have a guide they could send me or direct me to? I've tried a few google searches and nothing concrete for 5th gens has come up.

Honoestly though for folks that work on their car, it this a very difficult task? A lot of room for error? I'm not a pro at things but I've done a lot of DIY Projects (Brakes, Grill, Stereo). If its a hassle or a chance to mess it up, I can get it done at the dealership fro $110 (Assuming I provide the belts I have).

Thanks,
Justin

For replacing the belts, I'm pretty sure you can use any UDP install write-up. Here's a good one:

The most tricky part is probably getting the belts to the right tension after they're installed. Everything else should be pretty straightforward. Take a look at the write up and see if its something you'd like to attempt.

Another alternative to the dealership might be to see if some of the local .Org guys can help you with the install. It'd be a good experience, IMO. Semy2k2go and a few others are in your area.

Honestly, IMO this is not a DIY job.

Apart from the right tension raised by the moderator, and if still want to do it yourself, take my suggestion by trying to first loosen the bolt behind the PS pump (which incidently is in the most f.ckedup place on earth) only then go ahead with the entire job (alternator and PS belts).

My $0.02.

Justin, it might be kinda tough if you don't have an impact wrench I think. But yeah, Tim may be able to help you if he's not busy and you buy him lunch.

Actually the Haynes manual does detail in length something that is easy to replace -- the alternator belt. Its documentation on the bolt behind the pump etc is missing, I had to read the sevice manual to comprehend how to loosen the tension on the PS belt. Honestly, I would pay the dealer and get it done....

Dealer it is

Dealer it is, I'd rather not risk hassle . I got creative once with changing out my brake pads, had a friend (Doesnt own a max) help me out because he knew what he was doing (Sister had a 99 max). Anyway long story short we got everything changed out, but we broke a worm gear (Bolt on the top) for the rear right caliper, had to replace the whole caliper (Well I didnt have too, but if I thought if I ever wanted to use the parking break again I would need to). Anyway replaced the caliper myself and the parking break still doesnt work . So if I break the dag belt I'm really SOL hahha. (Yea I asked on the forum about the parking break and experiemented with it for a month with no luck, only one side that was original actually works well, but I have an automatic, no big deal)

Thanks again guys.

The first chapter in the Haynes mentions routine items, one is changing both belts, and it does mention that bolt.
