shifting into first really stiff!!!!

My 2000 5 sp has become hard to shift into first from a dead stop. Not always mind you - maybe 20% of the time - and not much difference hot vs cold - maybe a little worse when hot.
Tranny was rebuilt by Nissan at 85k km (noisy bearing) and now has 115k km (Canada). I have a B&M short throw shifter (which I lengthened slightly to make shifting easier). But shifting into first has gotten harder over time. Any other owners with similar problem and what is your opinion of what the problem may be??

Thanks, Martin

I have the same problem. Most of the time I can shift into 1st with ease. Every once in while its like I have to jam it in there. I'm at 130K with stock clutch and tranny.

Let out the clutch in neutral and then put it back in, I believe there is some sort of guard or something that hinders it.

I have a more mild case of what you are talking about and this occurs when engaging reverse aswell.

I have read elsewhere on the forum that synthetic tranny fluid really helps for this. Many use Redline or Amsoil. I'm planning to do Amsoil very soon as most have sighted amazing results.

You may need to replace shifter bushings. Or you can try and pump the clutch a few times when in nuetral. Possible that you could also need to bleed the clutch lines. If none work, I'd say nissan did a poor tranny job and synchros are worn.

I wonder if anyone can comment on the possible condition of the synchros for first gear and whether there is some sure way of knowing whether the synchros are even at fault?

Well if its the synchros its just going to get worse and worse. I mean if its only putting it in 1st from a dead stop then you should have much to worry about right now.

If you think syncros are screwed up, try moving the car first and then putting it in first, listen for the syncros, if they sound that means your syncros are

i do the same as wade in my ranger, i mean its not hard to put it in 1st but if you go from 2nd then to first it just lines everything up better.

There is no noise from the tranny whatsoever. Moving the shifter through second and back to first does help. I wonder if the shifting linkage is at fault and not moving the gears properly all the time causing hard engagement into first? It is scarry how hard it can be to get the stick into first every now and again in contrast to other times when it drops in effortlessly. I find the max tranny notchy anyways compared to others.

Any thoughts on the linkage theory?
