Broke my shift cable

I haven't posted a Thread in the 5th gen forum in a while, cause nothing big's happened to my car really. However, this evening coming home from a 1 1/2 hr trip my shifter cable (part attached to the tranny under the airbox) broke 1 mile from the house playing with an M3 at a light.

Power shifted into 2nd and took a jump, but immediatly hit the rev limiter a few times. "What the ****" was the look on my face. Shift **** wouldn't go into any gear, and was 100% free from all sides. I thought I fuXored my tranny, clutch, or my "free" short shifter bolt repositioning the shift link broke or something.

After a quick observation, my shift cable broke (I think). Had someone move the shift **** around, while I inspected the link under the hood. This is what I found. Everything is linked how it looks in the picture below. When the shifter was moved, the shift link stays still. Follow the cable back where it's wrapped around the accordian rubber grommet. That's where I think the cable is broke, because the bracket that that grommet is attached to moves when the shift **** is moved.

As a result there will be no changing gears for me until I fix this. Any one know what this part is call? I don't have a full copy of the FSM. What's gonna suck also is taking the 3 week old ES polyurethane bushing out of this and puting it in the new one.

btw, AAA is the bomb.

wtf...thats sux P...everything looks fine under the hood? if so, then it must be the "shifter cable bracket" that a few members posted a few weeks back...supposedly its a common problem?

damn, do you think the free STS has anything to do with this? i might just take mine out...just cuz I feel unsafe (even tho its been 1.5yrs)...but if you think the STS has nothing to do with it, lemme know

Did you look at the linkage under the shift ****/console as well? Might want to check there too.

I bought my 6speed cables from Dave B, but supposedly you have to buy them in pairs.

Well after further investigation I did in fact break the bracket. This was going into 2nd gear from 1st. Seems like 2nd and 4th would put the most strain on the bracket from the thread you posted, BewstAdd1ct. Just looking at it without the airbox removed under Wendy's parking lot light, it was hard to say exactly what it was. Now the daylight has confirmed I was wrong. I guess it's off to Nissan right now, after I make the call. I can't wait to get it shipped from Dave B unless my local doesn't have one in stock. Then I'll order from him. Thanks for your help guys, I didn't know what I was searching for at first or else I would have found the previous thread.

Yes Jason, 1 up on the m3.

Andrew- according to the posted thread, and no signs on my end of the short shifter having any part in this. Just looks like Nissan made a fragile part here.

Fawk me.......Like said in the previous thread, this part is on back order via Dave B and my local stealership. If anyone has an extra by chance laying around, please let me know.

Ok, so I decided to not wait on Nissan to make up their minds as to when this part was going to come in. I took my bracket to my dad, and he says that he'll have it fixed in 5 mins. (He's a machinst) Went to go pick it up today and it looked like the aluminum welds were very good. (30+ years experience) I hope it holds up being aluminum and all. He was going to make a support bracket for it, but he said that I should be fine with the weld job alone. (He doesn't know how I shift. )

At anyrate, my car's fixed as of right now, and I missed driving it. Joel, your ish will be checked out in the next day or so.

Thanks for all the help guys.

wow. you didnt read the thread i posted, did you?

also, 'you pull it' type places almost never have newer cars.

the sts has nothing to do with it, in fact, the sts decreaes the leverage on the linkage and transmission.

well, its a good thing M3s never break.

plenty of pick'n'pull yard have 2002-2003's as these cars are 5 years old now, they are not considered new cars
