Vibrations and Ride Quality Issues

Listen guys im out in ny and i have a 03 max and im not happy with the ride quality because i have some free play with the steering wheel and i feel alot viberation when turning the wheel sligtly or when hitting small or big bumps.

I just got some new tires
balanced all four tires.
under the car is fine and everything is nice and tight.
Rims are not bent.
Someone told me that it coming from the shaft.
I want to believe him but it seems out of the hundreds of people on this site only one person had this problem it makes me unsure of the problem.
I want to knew if someone in the NYC area can meet up with me and maybe look at each others cars. i just want to see if theres another maxima that doesnt have this problem and then maybe i will take it to the stealership.
thoese guys will always have different things to say. Im in the queens area.
But i will travel to brooklyn or if u want we can me up at a different area.
And guys dont worry im a cop (NO FUNNY STUFF). I just need help.

No Speeding guys

It could be a number of things.

1. Is it coming from one or both sides?
2. Are you in need of an allignment?
3. It's possible you either have a bad wheel bearing, cv joint or both.

I have the exact same problem and I also have 4 new tires that are freshly balanced, and also new brakes and rotors.

I would also like to know what may be causing the problem.

I too live in NYC (Brooklyn) and have a similar problem. I have a 03 GLE and the ride is pretty rough. I don’t know if it's because the roads are bad (which they are) or if there is a problem with the car itself. For example if I’m doing lets say 30 and I hit a medium sized pot hole it sounds and feels like the car will fall apart and for a few days after that I will hear that dam rattling noise (what the hell is that?!!) any suggestions?

The 5th Gen Maxima suspension isn't exactly a state-of-the-art design so ride quality, especially over bumps and railroad tracks will suck.

Maybe its the struts.

Hawaii has pretty bad roads, and my '00 GXE was having all sorts of ride issues. It had a funky vibrations at highway speeds, floaty as heck, it could not handle road irregularities (not to mention potholes) well. I put on some Tokico HPs and it made some of the ride issues a lot better. It fixed my highway vibrations completely.

Similar Problem

I own a 2003 Maxima SE Auto: 81,000 miles, Michelin Pilot Sport A/S

Originally had Michelin Pilot Sport A/S for 30K before new one’s and they were fine.

Car was in an accident 1.5yrs before this shaking started (black ice into guardrail, front end damage, no frame damage)

It has been shaking in the steering wheel and you can feel it in the gas pedal (my bottle of water sometimes rattles like hell in the console), you can also hear a humming noise on the right side of the car at most speeds, the shaking happens the worst at 72mph and is noticeable to **** people like myself anywhere from 30+ mph, it has been doing this for 6 months

When it started:

Brought Car to Nissan: 6x
I had Nissan shave rotors, replace pads and tighten e-brake cable.
I noticed shaking:
Nissan, rotated, balanced tires several times, front end alignment 2x, still shakes
Nissan, checked front end thoroughly, said everything is tight, still shakes

Brought Car to NTB (National Tire & Battery)2x:
Rotated tires and balanced several times, front end aligned 2x, had axle checked = fine

Brought Car to Sullivan Tire: 4x
Rotated Tires and balanced several times, (road force balanced)
Had them replace front rotors
Bought 4 new tires, road force balanced

Brought Car to Midas:
They said car is fine

Brought Car to Suburban Auto:
Had them recheck for frame damage = fine

Brought Car to a local Mechanic:
Replaced all 4 wheel bearings

Brought Car to Direct Tire:
Rotated Tires and balanced several times, (road force balanced)
Checked front end = fine

Brought Car to Nissan:
Had them replace front struts

Brought Car to Rim & Wheel Works:
They say all 4 tires are “out of round” less than 10k on them

I know that this is a long post, but any and all help would be greatly appreciated. I love this car and I don’t want to trade it in for an Altima. Thanks in advance, Rich.

Same vibration issues here.

Had it with stock rotors & susp. Have it with aftermarket susp. and rotors.
Have it on three different sets of rims and tires. Have it after too many alignments and balances to count.

Is the worst at about 115 km/hr. Was told the only things left may be bearings or driveshaft but both are expensive to diagnose.

Anyone fixed this prob with bearing or driveshaft replacement?

Best try looking at the CV joint... particularly the inner joint.. It's something that was brought to my attention today, this weekend I am going to look at it and let you know how it goes... I have a similar problem with my 2k SE and I did replace and align 4 new tires...

I finally got my vibration problem fixed. As I mentioned above, I have new pads and rotors, and new tires that were balanced.

I decided to take it back to Discount Tire because they gave me lifetime balancing. I saw that they had the Hunter Road-Force Balancing machine, so I requested that they used that since I didn't want to keep coming back for re-balancing. They agreed (no charge) and so far, so good. No more shimmy or vibrations.

factors to check:

1. obviously tire balance
2. obviously alignment
3. if over 70K miles, replace sway bar endlinks (I'm on my 3rd set)
4. if over 70K miles, replace steering tie rod ends (these wear out...)
5. wheel bearing check
6. if over 100K miles, might want to consider replacing lower control arm/lower balljoint assembly.
7. check bushings on front sway bar
8. check upper strut mount bearings.

all of these things can cause vibrations and particularly the tie rod ends and swaybar endlinks will be totally shot by about 70K of hard driving. Endlinks are about $40 each (need 2) and tie rod ends about $30 each (need 2). get alignment after doing tie rod ends...

the axle will have a little play, since it's a u-joint....

if you're wandering at highway speeds, it sounds like either your alignment is bad or your tie rod ends are shot. Those two things would have the biggest effect on steering wander. A bad bearing could do it too, but you would be getting noise to go with it.
