ok.. too much to read.. but sounds weird..
forget your mechanic.. recheck the spark yourself.
get a spare spark plug or a tester and make sure it indeed, does spark while you crank
check the fuel injectors.. as someone said.. noid lights are great!
as someone else said, check single side of y-pipe
then, check your spark plugs and make sure that all the tips are there, and not melted off and stuck on a piston or something like that, which of course, would heat up and ignite the air/fuel
