It's me again.
Does slipping auto transmission have any side effects except for slipping gears and acceleration pause? how is it bad for the tranny or engine? Thanks.

A slipping transmission will eventually eat away the gears and lead to the destruction of the transmission. It is important to get it fixed.

How do I know if my Max has this problem?

I just got a 20th Anv 2001 Maxima, which is an automatic. I believe my car was manufactured in Febuary of 2001. What kind of behavior does one need to look for?

If you floor it and the 1st to 2nd gear shift is slow, then you may have this problem. It is most noticeable when you are accelerating up a slope or a hill at greater than 1/2 throttle. The slow shifting may also occur in the 2nd to 3rd gear shift.

So wtf... Are all 5th Gen Automatic Maxima's affected by this?

What do you mean "it's slow"? Do you mean it will redline before it shifts, or it will be a long pause between gears? How do you know if it's 'slow' in shifting. My last car was a stick, so I don't even remember what the normal shift time is between gears.

For example, when I'm on the highway, and I floor it to pass, it will take a second before it drops a gear. But it seems normal. How do I know if that second is too long? Is that even what I should be looking for?

A slow shift would be when there is a long pause between the gears. I would say that if there is a 1/2 second or second delay between when the shift starts to when the second gear engages, it would be considered long. Also, during the shift, the rpms would keep rising rather than quickly falling back down as the car goes into gear. You can really tell if this is happening by simply listening for it. If the engine continues to rev during the shift and then slams into gear, it may be slipping. What you describe with the delay when flooring it is most likely just a normal characteristic. It takes time for the tranny to think

Well great... I don't know if mine is slipping or not.

I checked my VIN to see if it was built before the VIN's listed in the TSB (NTB00-0039). It doesn't appear to be, but then again I don't understand the VIN #'s. The manufactuer date on the car past the TSB date....

Well if the transmission burns up. I guess I'll fall back on the warranty.

Dude, I feel the same way...I got my 2K Max on May of 2K, and i think my car falls on that list. But how do I go to the dealer and tell them to replace my TCM and solenoid? They will think I am just talking gibberish.

They may, but in reality, they would have a hard time proving that the tranny defect is caused by the suspension But I wouldn't put it past Nissan service
