I know what you mean. Actually this is for my brother. He lives in NYC and will be moving to Atlanta in Aug and now needs to have a car and can actually enjoy driving a nice car . Problem is he needs to buy it before Aug before he moves to Atlanta. He is really kicking himself since '02 maxima is coming out just a couple months later.

With the 2002 coming out you could probably get it cheaper than that... dealers are going to be desparate to unload the 2001s. The ones around me already are.

I've been getting quotes at BELOW invoice from carsdirect.com on most Maxima's.
Invoice according to CarsDirect.com is $25,588 (did you include the options in your Edmunds invoice number?), but the "Target Price" I got from CarsDirect.com was $24,988. That's $600 below invoice.
I think he should be able to get a 2k1 Max at or below invoice at this point, especially with the 2k2's coming out in a few months.
As for the timing, that REALLY BITES BAD for your brother, especially if he wants a 2002. Now is a great time to buy a 2001 though if you want a good price b/c the 2002's will probably be going for much higher prices. It'll cost some money, but I think I might seriously consider RENTING a car for a month or two in order to get a 2002 Max (if that's what your brother wants) You can sometimes get discounted weekly or even monthly rates from a rental place I think.
Just something to think about, and my $0.02

The used car/rental may not be such bad ideas. Since he's moving to ATL, he should look at Maxes there because there are many Nissan dealerships in the area. BTW, I paid approx. $24,500.00 for my 2001 5spd SE with almost every option (e.g. C&C, leather, meridian, etc.)back in Feb of 01 (here in ATL). Based on what I know about the 2002, it's going to be considerably more expensive than an 01, I would imagine.
