let it idle, or turn off the car, for better gas mileage?
So whats the real deal here? I've heard rumors that it takes alot of gasoline to start up a car? I frequently make quick trips to the 7-11 and other places...and most of the time I leave my car on and have my friend watch over...it takes no more than 3 minutes for me to grab whatever, and take off....would it be better to turn the car off, and not let it idle (since its using up gas?)....or leave the car idling, since the injectors are spraying a small amount of gas?

i believe a startup requires the same amount of gas that it takes to idle for 1 minute, or around there.
but u should put in the fact that if you keep turning it off and starting, you will wear out your block a lot faster because the lack of pressure when u turn it off

If you idle for more than 10 seconds you are wasting gas (not to mention the environmental aspect). In Europe, people turn their cars off at stop lights, for both reasons.

?????????? - Don't know what that means
Of Course if you using Regular gas instead of High Octane you can probably afford to waste the gas.

I turn it off unless I want the AC to keep me cold (of the heat to keep we warm for that matter). Man, I used to only use the fan outside of 60-85 degrees-I'm now officially a wussbag (but maybe that's cause my ac doesn't seem to have much effect on gas mileage like it has on my older cars).

when u start up it takes more gas cuz your engine isn't mobile; if you understood physics, it takes less energy to keep something moving rather than moving it from a standstill.
also, if u really don't know what the second one means you are a farking idiot so don't comment on what ANYONE posts even if it sounds stupid to everyone else because you are probably the biggest idiot on the forums right now
shows how smart u are by posting bullsh*t like that in an attempt to flame me
Okay, so some say 10 seconds some say 30 seconds some even concur with "PERFESSER " getbigtony and say 1 minute. Whooped-dee-doo

@getbigtony, so i guess we should just keep our car running all the time, that way there will never be any wear on the block, because it will always be under pressure. What lack of pressure are you talking about?
Now THAT is some pressure.
Let it idle.
Every mechanical device wears much faster if you keep starting and shutting it off... But keep in mind that idling for a long time (I'd assume more than 10 - 15 minutes) is not good for your engine either.

in terms of fuel consumption, the general rule of thumb is 30 sec of idle = 1 startup... andrew you're wasting gas! hahah... i do the same thing as you though...
The most wear on the engine occurs at start up. This is because the oil starts to settle downwards away from your engine components due to gravity. Therefore when you start it back up, the sudden shock of all the parts getting to move again plus the seconds it takes for all the oil to get circulated properly causes wear.
As far as gas mileage is concerned, most of my reading says to shut off the car if you are going to idle for more than a few minutes. Supposedly it is a strain on the engine, especially if your running the A/C and there is no airflow moving through the car so the intake temp and coolant temps are higher than normal (confirmed with my ECU readings)

Turning it off and starting it again uses a little more fuel but not like it did during the days of the carburator. The biggest thing is wear and tear on other parts. I'd just let it idle if its going to be anythin less than 10 minutes.

This is probably why they invented Castrol GTX Start Up. (probably the same as the regular stuff
)Anyway, I'd say just let it idle if you're only going in for a few minutes.

Now THAT is some pressure.i've never said it was a fact, and of course, as you've just said yourself, some say 10 seconds and 30 seconds...
as to the pressure
but if u still don't know.. sheesh..
OIL PRESSURE
do you know what your oil and oil pump is for? to lubricate your internals
your internal parts never touch each other while it is running, rather, they are floating on the oil
if it is stopped, there isn't that constant pressure to keep the internal parts afloat and then, they will contact, and when started, will wear.
