Tranny starting to skip: what do you guys recommend?

Just as title says. After long problems with the IACV and Throttle body, i think I caused some damage to the tranny. Now when it shifts to 2nd gear, it skips for just a second and the rpm shoot up. What do you guys think I should do?

mine started like that too... it died 3 months later... u can get a good used tranny for around $600 and just swap them around. took me 8 hours, and i had no lift, no normal tools and absolutely no experience with transmissions...

there is a TSB for this.
you need new solenoids and/or TCM.

Sadly my warrany has expired and the TCM wont be fixed so I figure a new tranny would do it.

FriscoMaxima: the tranny you got was from a 2000 or 2001?

Is the 2001 VLSD an exact replacement for a 2000 with an auto tranny or would I have to make modifications to it? I guess a better question would be if the VLSD was standard on all 2001 Maximas, or if it was just for manual trannys?

I don't think I have to worry about my transmission any time soon (knock on wood) but in the event that I do have to worry about it, I'd love to know if I could swap it directly... and once the VLSD is swapped in (assuming it's a cost-effective swap), would the VB mod be a recommended course of action while I'm at it, or is it unnecessary with the VLSD?

VLSD came on ALL 2k1 AE models; manual and automatic. A vlsd tranny will drop in with no modification needed, all you need is an LSD drivers side axle.

i'd buy it if it had less miles... my tranny has 14K on it right now... so the swap would be stupid...

Heh, hes in CA and im in NY.
It will cost me an arm and a leg to get it. I will look in my area.

The poll results show a lot of people leaning toward the LSD tranny.
After purchasing it, should we replace some worn parts or just swap it.

There is a newer TB #04035 issued Mar. 04 whereby Nissan MAY replace the valve bodies on Gen. 5 and 5.5s. Obviously a known issue other than just leaky "O" rings.

Samson, is there a maximum milleage where they wont fix the TM? Do you need to be under warranty?

What does a TCM look like?
Is it the one thats behind the dash, where the radio and center consule sits?
When searching on car-part.com it asked if it has a locking or non locking transmission. How can you tell?

Update: Tranny still working, changed the TCM to the newer updated 2001 version. Still no change but shes still going strong and still skipping! I drive her on a daily basis! I think I put another 3000-4000 miles to it while skipping so far. Lets put down bets on how long she will go, lol.

The search shall begin for a 2001 tranny in my area!
