Air filters ...
Just wondering if a fram air filter will work equally as good as the Nissan one. If I remember correctly, the fram filter doesn't seem to have oil in it. The stock ones from Nissan are somewhat oily. Any advantage/disadvantage to having a dry filter verses a lubed one? And how much do you guys pay for your stock filters?

Yeah, I noticed that, I had some older nissan ones from a couple of years back, and they all seemed decent. I had one from last year, and the box was different than the ones of 2 years ago. Today I went to pick up a couple more, I like having at least one spare, and they seemed cheaper made, plus they ditched the cardboard box, and they're more expensive. I had a bill of sale from last year, under 10 bucks before taxes, today was closer to 13 dollars. What the??? 30% hike in one year? Wish my salary did the same.

I have no experience with FRAM ToughGard oil filters or AirHog air filters, but their standard oil/air filters suck.

I bought Nissan filter from a Nissan dealer before. The filter element was oiled, its thin rubber seal didn't seal well against the housing, let dust collected inside air box within only 1000 miles, and killing the already weak MAF with another 1000 miles. After getting a $100 new MAF replacement I then changed to Purelator which seemed has paper element with no oil, and had a impressive metal frame and tight rubber seal, so far so good. Lesson learnt, never using any oily filter to mass the MAF.

I would use nothing but a Nissan filter in my Max. I had an aftermarket air filter in my 2000 Max and it killed my MAF in less than 3K miles. The aftermarket air filters for our cars suck. They don't seal right in the airbox leaving your car susceptable to dirt and grime in the MAF.

AMSOIL vs OEM COMPARISON
DIRTY OEM FILTER
Note how there is no real 'gasket' around the sides.
NEW AMSOIL AIR FILTER
Note the significantly larger surface area and the thick, heavy-duty gasket around the sides. Make no mistake - this beauty fits in there SNUG.

Where are Amsoil air filters sold at? And are they oily like the Nissan ones?

The PureOne Purolator filter I purchased looks exactly like the Amsoil filter. The PureOne is a replaceable pre-oiled filter. Has an excellent rubber surround that seals tight in the airbox.

Which retailer carries these and how much are they?

They are NOT oil like the Nissan OEM ones and do not require to be oiled. You can get them in Group Deals forum from the Classifieds section. Talkinghorse is an AMSOIL dealer, great guy to deal with.

It's definitely a good value.

Man, I'm not quite sure why you guys are having problems with the OEM air filters. Ever since owning my '00, I had never had any problems with the OEM having a bad seal letting dirt thru. Inside my MAF housing, it's is clear and clean as new. I usually do a throttle clean every 6 months, and change my air filter about every 4 months or so. I know that may be over doing it, but I like to keep my car running like new. Metal, looking at that pic of the OEM filter, I would never let it get that bad. Just curious, how long was that filter in there before you changed it? Has anyone seen the new Nissan air filters? They changed the filter color to red.

No, I haven't, I got 2 just yesterday, and they weren't red. They're more of a white/yellow color, and they no longer come w/ a box.

Proline Paper (i think it's a premium) from Pep BOys in mine since the first swap @ 10k. Seems to be doing well - no issues....sturdy filter with decent density, construction and seal.
I will not use an oily filter or aftermarket cone-type intake.

get a cold air, or at least drop in a K&N drop in box filter it catches mor dirt while letting much more air in, it is easy to clean and will last for ever! paper isn't the way a car need to breathe, go with a better system or filter and it will improve gas milage and sound when full throttle!
