Anyone know about Tranny's & Torque Converters in a 5th gen?????

--Tonight was the conformation i needed that this wasnt my 11k mile old MAF.. I was driving on the x-pressway, and I could not get my car over 68 MPH.... then at one point it slipped (pretty bad) in 4th gear at around 4000 RPMs.
It may be more than the torque converter, but I am hoping that is all it is.

--So my question is; can the torque converter be changed alone? or is it an integral part of the Transmission?
My other question is; does the TCM have any control over the torque converter??? I ask because I just changed mine with one from a 2001, it was driving fine for about a week, but now it just got worse... it actually feels like as if someone had pushed in a clutch when the tranny slipped in 4th gear???
and if a torque converter is replaceable, would I only be able to replace with a 00-01? or could I use the 96-99 also?
any help appreciated

(my previous post)
"I have noticed that my 2k A/T max has been losing signifigant top and bottom end..
I noticed this high pitch sucking sound from my pop-charger intake (sounds like a big air leak in a tire) but it stops exactly at 2500 RPMs,

Then when I give it WOT the RPMs shoot up to 5000 and you can hear the VIAs open, and the RPMs move very slowly to 5800-6000 where it finally shifts.
Now heres the really strange part; The car is not really accelerating???"

if u can get it to 4K RPMs, and then slip, it's not your torque converter
its probably your clutch packs
