Place Racing 5.0 Gen CAI

I'm interested in doing this mod. I daily drive my car and would obviously remove the setup for winter seasons.

If I am correct during regular summer/spring driving I should be fine with the filter sitting so close to the wheel as the only way I can harm the engine is if the filter in fact gets submerged into water. Am I correct by saying this? Looking for some input for those who have this intake.

Also is the performance worth cutting to install?

By chance does anyone have a copy of the PR template that they can send me?

1. no, I'm not worried about water. The water would have to be about 18" deep to submerge the filter....I have an Injen hydroshield on the filter to keep it from gettting muddy in case of an especially deep puddle or something....

2. yes, it is worthwhile. I might still have the template around. Let me know if you buy one, i'll look for it them.

3. I used only the downward part of the pipe and kept my stock 'accordian' piece downstream of the MAF assembly. I feel this give is a better low end. With my setup low/mid/high end are all improved over stock. Definitely worth it.

4. Good luck finding one....they aren't made any more since PR is out of business. BTW, the Cattman CAI is the same (made by PR, also not made anymore)...just so you have more options when looking on ebay...

Well theres this shop by me where you basically build your intake. They had an Injen style for 5th gens. I can easily re-model it and grab extra pieces if required to form it into a PR Style CAI.

Irish, I still use the accordian connector, did you also keep the stock resonator that connects to it as well?

I've pm'd you about the PR template.

Go to the Cattman website: http://www.cattman.com/prod_intake.html

It seems you can still buy the PR CAI, you'd have to be in touch with them though.. recently I've thought about purchasing one of these as well.. maybe next summer.

Is this the same CAI that Irish stated doesn't exist on this terrestrial plane we all call Earth?

Tdot/Khynex....I'll look for the template...I "think" I still have it, but can't say for sure. PM me your mailing addresses and I'll xerox a copy for you and mail it. I don't have a scanner here at home.

Tdot...yes, I kept the small resonator piece as well.

the Cattman intakes were made BY place racing. Brian Catts himself posted here on the org a while back that they weren't getting anymore made (since PR is out of business) and were all out of them. The website needs to be updated.....but give him a call anyways...maybe he found one sitting around...you never know.

I love my PR CAI. wouldnt change it for anything. The deep grawl that i get when i floor. Between that and my exhaust it is great. I have never put a bypass valve in and I am using the entire PR CAI setup. The filter keeps my intake immaculate. I was skeptical about the foam filter but it has held up pretty damn good and there is no oil (KN) to gum up your MAF. Just make sure that the hole you cut is large enough to where the intake doesnt rub when the motor torques. I lost a MAF sensor b/c there was to much vibration b/c i didnt cut the hole large enough(Very Stupid On My Part). But in all I love it.

on this thread
http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=492764

I will be trading him my stock air for his place racing one. since I don't want to install it on my Max you can buy it off me if you like?

I am from Toronto also and am a member of torontomaxima.com, so you can pm over there (same ID there) and we can discuss a price if you like
Cheers

first as pertaining to the thread starter. There should be no problems with a CAI as long as you do not go driving through deep puddles, or deep snow. Which even if you didn't have a CAI you should not be doing. As to the person I quoted I have used K&N filters for many many years and never heard of their oil gumming up a MAF sensor. I also believe there is no proof to this at all. Maybe if you are a complete moron and spray on an entire bottle of oil and soak the filter then put it on your car immediately after.

I just think a couple of people have over done it with the oiling process for the K&N but I was not trying to say that anyone here has done this just that a few in the past who didnt know what they where doing have over oiled the filter. There really isnt a hole lot of proof but whatever. i think that as long as the filter is nonrestrictive and still filters well thats all that matters. Be it K&N or any other.

I was wondering that as well. How would oiling your filter make it all the way up to the MAF unless its dunked into oil and reved at the same time.

All i was really trying to initially say about the filters is that the filter that came with my PR CAI has pleased me.

ive used the cosmo intake for a while just replaced it with my place racing. the cosmo filter is very low to the ground(bad for water suckage) and it sits right behind the lower radiatior and fan, so it actually gets a lot of hot air blown on it. and since its still getting engine bay air, its not really a cai. its more of a KHKCAI, "kinda hot kinda coolish air intake"

honestly i dint notice a difference in power between the two, but the place racing does sound a whole heck of a lot better.

did anyone get there pr to fit right, all the ones ive seen installed had to have a few modifications done in oreder to get them to work. i figure all would be like that but never know unless u ask.

Is the cosmos designed more like a injen intake then?

Based on my personal experience, I would not recommend it... I checked the filter on a hunch and found it to be soaked... Immediately I pulled the lower "snorkle" off and converted the intake to a short ram. Dyno tests shows a gain over the CAI and I can drive in foul weather with confidence.
