My Trannsmission is shot... NO it's your CATALYTIC CONVERTER???
ok so heres the deal; I have 2000 A/T and ever since I ran N2O in it my transmission was slamming into 2nd gear. So I read the TSB on the Solenoid, and considered it, until Soonerfan enlightened me about the TCM.
So about 3 weeks ago I put in 2001 TCM from a junkyard, and it's like I have a new transmission. WOOHOO
Then about a week goes by and my tranny starts to act funny, it kept downshifting at the wrong times,
My pop charger was making this really high pitch sucking noise to 2500 RPMs then it would stop.
My car would hit 5000k RPM's and you could hear the VIAS open, and the car would not go any faster..it would take like 10 seconds to go from 5100 RPMs to 5700
This only progressed until the car was maxing out at like 65MPH..
And the transmission would slip at the top end of 3rd and forth gear, almost like a clutch was being pressed real quick.
So from all of these symptoms I thought for sure my clutchpack or torque converter were shot, I dropped the car off to my mechanics and then started to call around looking for used 01 Auto trannys.
Well my mechanic calls me up, and says he thinks that my Cat is clogged, and that he want to pull out the main cat first to check, so I say go ahead.
He pulls out the main CAT, and he said it had all broken down in there, so he took a impact hammer, and gutted the inside of the Main CAT.
He said the loss of power form the clogged cat will throw off the TPS sensor and other sensors, causing the tranny to shift funny and do the weird stuff it was doing.
I pick up my car last night. and it's like I got a new car, my max didnt even drive like this when I bought it last Dec.
Go figure it was a clogged cat. Now my only concern is that I am sure my pre-cats are clogging up also. So I need to eliminate them next.
Apparently the only way cats will fall apart like this is if there is raw fuel getting to them. Well with my car having a faulty coilpack when I bought it, im sure that misfire let alot of raw fuel through.
Just thought I would post this for anyone who may be experiencing symptoms like these...

Hey,
Not sure if I would trust a mechanic that will gut a cat to fix your problem, it may even be illegal. You can only repalce a cat if it has like 50K on it or is defective. I would purchase a high flow as a replacement, I think Cattman has them. Gutting the cat will not only eliminate your emissions, but may cause more backpressure, as airflow is going to swirl around, and not flow properly through it. just my .o2 spend it as you wish.

But anyhow it was a combo of bad coil and faulty injector in my #6 cyl that was dumping raw fuel into my exhaust that ultimately caused the cat failure...

haha, that mechanics def. trustworthy, he could have taken your money for a tranny install, pocketed a tranny, and gutted the cat without telling you, sounds like he properly diagnosed it and really quickly too. Hell I would have tipped him, you should buy the shop mad coffees and doughnuts one morning, or beers on a friday, then you'll have the illest hook-up, that's how I get my welding done for free.

to check for a plugged cat, the best thing to do is a visual inspection, but that's kinda tricky. the other way, assuming no cel, is to connect a vacuum gauge to a port on the intake manifold, a plugged exhaust will cause pressure to build up everywhere in the motor before it, so the vacuum will steadily drop as pressure increases., I beleive you have to hold the throttle open a little bit and bring it to 1,500 rpms, wait for the vacuum reading to equalize, then see if it slowly keeps dropping, if you buy the gauge at sears it comes with very detailed instructions and result A=problem X type thing, a vacuum gauge is a very useful tool for diagnosing alot of different problems, well worth the $30.
(oh and check your tranny fluid asap of course if you haven't already)
