I would check the tie rods. The bearings could get sloppy from wear and you don't want them to go out completely while you're driving...

"Play" would be if you can move the steering wheel somewhat before the car actually starts moving that way. It's best noticed when you're going straight. If you can steer left, right, left, right, etc. just turning it a little each way and the car makes absolutely no change in direction, you've got play.

If you don't have too much play, I have a 2000 and I've noticed my steering is naturally a little like that due to the power steering. I'm tempted to get an underdrive pulley for the power steering pump to make the steering stiffer.

Ive noticed the same thing on my 2000 I30 with 47K miles. Seems almost like the power stearing needs to be turned down a notch or two.

Any way to reduce the power stearing boost without changing the pulley?

i don't think that can be done.. we use steering racks. if we used a steering gear, i believe, then it can be done

I think what you're trying to say is the power steering system is over-assisting. If that's the case then there's really nothing you can do about it. If you want more steering feel, I guess you can add wider tires or a limited-slip differential, but that's just plain stupid. Also, check your tire pressure; if they're over-inflated it could cause your steering to feel "loose".

But, if your steering wheel is actually loose - i.e. you can easily turn the wheel with the engine off, then you need to bring it to a mechanic. Better yet, have it towed.
