I'm driving down the freeway at 85mph (75 limit) and this guy in a VR-4 flys by me. I try to catch up and he takes my off ramp. I'm like lets see whats up cause there is nothing but open road for like 7-8 miles ahead of us. We are both at the light and I have a car in front of me and he does not so I am like $hit. He takes off like a ***** f*cka and he is way down the road by the time I get passed the car in front of me. As I clear the car he seems to be slowing down to let me catch up. I catch up at about 80mph and we both hit it. He pulled an immediate car on me then about another car. I get behind him to both catch draft and we were passing cars on a two laner. As soon as I got behind him he no longer pulled, not even an inch. I actually started to pull him at around 125mph because of the draft. I was like WTF this VR-4 can not be this slow! We pulled up to a light and I gave him a thumbs up and turned.

Here are my thoughts: Either the guy can not drive and he never downshifted or that draft really sucked me in.

Do you have stick or auto?
because if you have the stick you can beat those cars cuz they're heavier

I am sure he got more than that! But keep in mind that he have no torque at high RPM whatsoever. The VR4 recieves all its 315lb of torque at 2500rpm. So maybe that is why. But VR4 is very fast at high speed.

As for the race, my dad likes to prove his car is good, but he still would let the other person wins just for the sake of being nice, maybe that person was like that.

There is no way this car was a SL or base. He took off from the stoplight crazy fast till he slowed down to let me catch up.

As far as beating a Z28? From 0-30 yes, any other race the Z28 had better be a LT1 cause the LS1 will kill a VR-4.

As far as mee keeping up with this guy? I feel he never downshifted and just hit the gas in whatever gear he was in which would make it believable to keep up with.

muhahaha...that's bad...for a 'sports' car...
during that year, even an integra GS-Rs would have kicked that base model's a$$...
that's even weaker than the non-turbo 300Zs...
those things dynoed around 160 to 170 to the wheels....

Actually, high-end engine performance is best determined by horsepower (not torque) and at what RPM the peak horsepower occurs.

Going by the Torque formula:

Torque = (HP * 5252) / 6000

So if that puppy is putting out 320HP @ 6000rpm (according to Edmunds.com) then at 6000rpm it's still making 280 lb-ft of torque, or 263 lb-ft for the 300HP version.

An example of an engine that will fall flat on its face at high-rpm is the old-version 3.8L pushrod-OHV V6 in 96-98 Mustangs.

It cranked out 215lb-ft of torque at 2750rpm, but only made 150HP at 4000rpm.

So using the same forumula, at 4000rpm that engine would only be putting out 196lb-ft at 4000rpm, and because that's the power peak (well before redline) the torque output of the engine falls off like a fricken rock after that.

So they were reasonably strong off the line, but once you get above the torque peak in those things it's all downhill and there's nothing there. The new V6's in the Mustang have had a considerable amount of intake work done on them and they now no longer fall flat on their faces anymore at higher RPM's.

The Mitsubishi 3000GT/ Dodge Stealth turbo twins will pull strongly all the way up to redline.
