RPM at 80MPH

Hey Guys I'm sure this has been asked before. I just did a search and browsed through the first 5 pages and found nothing so I figure I'd just ask.

I have an 01 5Spd. When in the highway my RPM at 80 are like 3400RPM . Is this what everyone else gets? I find it a bit high and just want to make sure I am not alone. I figure a V6 with 222HP would have a lower RPM at 80 which is what I usually cruise at.

What's your RPM at 80? 5th gen people please... I know the 5.55Gen is under 3000 at 80, I actually found a thread on that one. Not the 5th gen though.

Please chime in... thanks.

It's a mechanical relation, and is tied into your tranny, speedometer,

So it will always be the same as everyone else

So anyone care to explain why it would be 'high'? Slipping clutch?

I've seen your RPM/Speedometer pic 6spd FTW.

I finally got ~ 250 miles per 1/2 tank. Another 'funny' and invalid comparison.

LW wheels FTW. 27MPG IBanothermpgthread

It most definately would. Reason being is the gear ratios are different.

Ok., so I just did a more detailed search dating back to 2000. A lot RPM threads for 2002-03 but very few for the 00-01.
FYI - My idle is at 600-650RPM... I will also, check my RPM at other speeds tomorrow morning during my commute. Hope some more chime in. Thanks

mine is around 3300. i have a 5 speed. and as far as i can tell its normal. its not the most fuel efficient 5th gear, but it pulls pretty hard.

from what ive found thats not true. most 5spds tend to turn pretty high RPM's on the highway.

seeing as the 4th gen 5spd and 5th gen 5spd are virtually identical, my 4th gen at 80MPH(130KMH) is around that too.

I know this is a 5th gen question but on my 5.5 with no cars around, I did a quick run to 100...3200RPM in 6th!

I don't believe that's correct: the VSS reads the tire-RPM's from the transmission differential and sends that as an electrical signal, I believe to the speedometer. Whether you're running 22" diameter front tires or 30" ones (which will most definitely yield vastly different actual speeds at identical wheel RPM's), at any given wheel-RPM the speedo is getting the same signal from the VSS (regardless of the tire diameter) and converts it to MPH based upon the stock tire circumference it's been programmed to believe you're running. Now if a cop is reading your speed on a radar gun and you're running smaller-than-stock tires (i.e., shorter), then your engine RPM for an actual speed will run higher than with stock-size tires.
Doesn't answer the original question of why the RPM's seem unusually high for an indicated 80MPH. My 4th gen with a 5th gen 5-speed with VLSD runs around 3100-3200 RPM at 80 MPH.

5 spd at 80 rpm should be at 3250-3300.

VQ30 automatic, VQ35 manual, VQ35 automatic will have different RPMs because of different gear ratios.

rmd0311: 3700 is a lot of rpm's for 80 mph. What tire/wheel combo are you running, how many miles on your car? Did you test on a straight and even roadt stretch over a couple of miles? It may seem like your clutch is starting to go....

my 2k GXE 5spd is getting 25-30 mpg in 5th gear, depending on the load, wind, weather, quality of gas....

How the hell did you get 300 miles to a half tank? Was your car on crack at the time? Long trip, granny driving. Or better yet, did the needle suddenly frop from half tank to empty 70 miles later.

Nope, I got about 570 miles out of a little over 17 gallons....it was on a long trip and I had my sunroof open with the a/c off. I've seen similar results several times even with the A/C on. I used to get 28-29 mpg every time I filled up mixed city/hwy driving, and now I only get 22 mpg because I live in a city with a crapload of traffic and all my driving consists of trips < 3mi...it sucks...

Now is your car a 4 cyl, or a 6cyl?

Mines a V6 and it doesnt get nearly that many miles per gallon highway
