Wierd knocking problem upon cold startup. Help!

I have this wierd problem with my car upon cold startups. When I turn the key, the starter kicks in, and the engine catches, and every now and again (I would say every 2nd cold start), just as soon as the engine revs up initially, i hear this knocking sound coming from the engine bay, that lasts about a second.

To me it sounds like oil starvation, but when I check the oil levels, they're all at the high end (Yes, i'm checking on level terrain, and after the car has sat at least an hour). Anyone have any insight as to what it could be that's causing this, and is it cause for concern?

this is typical on 02-03 maximas...don't worry about it....they say its more of an annoyance than damaging the engine...

however if its buggin you that badly & you are under warranty, get it fixed at the dealers...

Sorry - i searched but I guess I must have missed it. I'm no longer under warranty, as i'm at about 125k KM. Otherwise the car runs great. Any insight as to what it's actually doing would be great to help put my mind at ease.

it has to do with the VTC sprockets...i dunno exactly the problem...but its a PITA to fix the problem...i.e. requires skill which the avg amatuer mechanic cannot do...

i've had this problem and so has many others...and we just live with it

Ah thanks for the info.

Is it something that will require major repair down the road if I don't have it looked at sooner rather than later? Or is it basically something i can live with for another couple years (4 or so) until I get a new car?
