Is my clutch about to go on my 02?

I have a 6sp maxima..when I step on the clutch and hit first I hear like a screeching sound. As soon as I let go off the clutch it stops. This sound only happens on 1st and 2nd. Any idea of whats happening. I'm so worried!

Does it sound like the noise happens when you push the pedal or when you shift?

It sounds like a throwout bearing going bad but that's not a common problem on these cars. How many miles on the car?

definately sounds reminiscent (spelling?) of my 96 maxima right before i needed tranny work done (original sound was throw out bearing, but there were other year specific problems included in that)

sounds like your throw out bearing is shot. Does it do it when you are letting the clutch out and starting to move? If so, when it starts making noise if you push the pedal back in will it quite? that is typically what happens with bad TO bearings.

have not had a chance to replace it! its still doing it..and ughgh its so annoying..how much would I expect to pay to get my throw out bearing replaced? should I get it online and then take it to get installed? annoying sound when I step on the clutch from idle to 1st gear or from moving to second gear

You don't just replace the throwout bearing. Just replace the clutch and throwout bearing together. Replacing the throwout bearing requires the same work as doing a clutch. May as well throw a new clutch in while the tranny is out anyway. You'll need to do it sometime and it's a pretty labor intensive job. You'll be 99% there just getting to the bearing.

BUSSSSSSTT
I was driving yesterday to work and the clutch pedal just gave up! Awful! The pedal sunk and something was dragging. I got my car towed to the show and sure enough, I am getting the whole clutch replaced instead of just the throwout bearing. 550 for a clutch from the dealer + installation = 750? yikes! A question, will I feel more power from my Maxi with a new clutch?

Unless your clutch was slipping in addition to your TO bearing being bad, you won't feel any additional power just from replacing the TO bearing.

got my car back from the shop this past weekend and wow! I love the new clutch. Before there was a "crack" down shifting from 4th to 3rd and now its smooth. I can feel a bit more power on the ride although I think Im due for spark plugs. I had a squeak on one of the pulleys and I guess the mechanic tightened those up. My car is smooth!

On another note, does anyone know where I can get a right side marker light harness for cheap? Some idiot stole that side marker light and foglight this weekend. Sucks!
