5th Gen LSD Options

Ok, so I got to wondering has anyone on the board tried the phantom grip LSD's for the Maxima?

http://www.phantomgrip.com/product_l...p?make=Nissan#

I had one of these installed on one of my 240sx's last year and it worked great, no complaints at all.

what kind of LSD is it? Would the VLSD from the 01 AE fit on a 2000?

Yes, from what I understand the VLSD from the 01 AE will work. But you will need to swap the driverside driveshift.(I believe)

The phantom grip is actually a component that you add to your existing diffierintal to make it LSD.

On the 240sx I had to drop the rear end and take the pumpkin cover off and insert the phantom grip.

So, I guess everyone is picking up the Transmission from the 01 AE? Well, does anyone have a price point on this option?

hmmm did you try dave burnett? I am purchasing an H-LSD from him for 450 and he told me I don't need to change the axles so I am popping that in. Then motor mount inserts, lots of energy suspension bushings, and stainless steel brake lines.

I have heard of the phantom grip. How does it work? How much does it lock? I meen a LSD on my car would be helpfull in many situations but a LSD that locks too much has no place on a daily driver that you want to enjoy driving everyday.

If it works well though it has many possible advantages
better in snow (the big selling point for me when it comes to using the car as a daily driver)
Better in the corners, and in a straight line(nice added bonus)

The possible downfalls if it locks too much

Makes a terrible turning radius unbearable

puts more stress on the already weak tranny when launching(I am talkin about the auto trannies here)

Anyone who knows more about it fill me in

Wish we could get a TORSEN unit for these cars. I miss the one on my old Audi.

Decoy036SPD, it's a little more involved than just an R & R for the diff. Unless you are experienced with replacing ring and pinion gears AND their set-up I would plan on bring it to an experienced shop. Your knew HLSD diff will have to be shimmed side to side to achieve the same spacing as the origional open diff to keep the same contact patch with the pinion gear as the origional. Otherwise you may end up ruining your ring and pinion or worse.

the phantom grip = crap

The only one really available is the quaife (but i heard it's discontinued, so it's gonna be hard to find.)

VLSD wears out so i've been told.

I've thought about using the AE HLSD, but didn't think it was a good use of my money. I don't have any significant traction problems with the open diff when autocrossing unless I'm doing it on purpose. It might gain me a little bit of time, but a set of r-comp tires would cost less and gain me alot more time

It would be nice to have for the snow/ski trip too, but I have better things to do with the money and I'm more or less done with any major mods to the maxima. New house coming soon....
