How many 5th Gen Maximas in the 200,000+ miles club?
I'm about to get a 2001 for a great deal, fully loaded, all the bells and whistles I could ask for, but is has 140,000 miles on it.
So, I just want to get an idea of how many Org members have 200,000 miles or more on their car.
I plan to take this one to the hilt! 300k baby! (hopefully)
--Please, do not post unless you have over 100,000 miles!--
--Seriously, for this topic I don't think people care if you have "65k going strong", but thanks for the interest--

How much do you think it is going to cost to maintain a car w/ 140K on it? Aside from the standard coils, paint, MAF and catalytic converter issues these cars have, you will also be running into things like timing chain, water pumps, transmission replacement, miscelaneous oil leaks and maybe even head gaskets. These items are in addition to typical maintenance items like tires, struts and belts.
If you are a mechanic and plan on doing all the labor yourself then it may be a good deal but if you plan on paying someone else to fix all these things then you are probably looking at spending many $ on maintenance. I didn't spend that much on my Max until this year (it hit 100K this year). I spent over $3K this year (and I did many jobs myself).
Someone I work w/ had a head gasket go at 140K on a 5th gen Max. You are taking a chance w/ that many miles. You should make sure you get a good deal.

My mom's has ~235k on it now, and it's still running very well! She's had to change the coils and MAF at 60k miles and two new motor mounts at a little over 200k iirc. Other than that it's just been regular maintenence. the VQ30s are very reliable so if the car appears to be taken care of, I wouldn't have any fear in buying it.
195,000 on my 2K, I just changed the spark plugs after about 70K and they were the nicest color tan you have ever seen, meaning there is little or no blow by. I maybe have to add 1/2 quart between a 3k mile oil change. the 3.0 is one really bombproof motor. the input shaft bearing is gone on my 5spd tranny and I'm loosing fluid around the axle seals, but I'm still a believer in the car. 140K is nothing...... good luck!
I bought my 95 with 140,000 on it. I fixed a few regular wear items it needed when I bought it. It never gave me a bit of trouble. Traded it with 200,000 when my 02 got traded in at the dealership where I work. I made my self an offer I couldn't refuse. The 02 had 70,000 on it and now has 108,000.
It better be a good deal!
I have 130K on my 2002 Maxima.. I have to change the O2 sensor, and the MAF. If you have someone do it, it will cost you $1000... so factor stuff like that in. I'm sure I'll break the 200k mile marker one day, but not without paying $$$ for some repairs that WILL need to be done to cars with so many miles.
I really think higher milege cars are great if you can work on them yourself. It's a great way to get more car than you'd normaly pay for and make up the difference with your own labor over time.
If you're the type who has a mechanic do most of your repairs then a lower milege car might be better. It's not hard to drop a grand or more in repairs that only involve a small cost for the parts. If you're going to do that you could just spend more for a lower milege car.
If you have the tools and do your own repairs then I'd say go for it if the car is clean and straight. The cars are great and will have less problems than most other cars but all cars start needing work at that milege.
The way I look at it is that nothing is free. You either pay with money or you pay with your time and skills in fixing it yourself. If you don't have the time and skill then you better have the money.

100k seems to be the magic "screw you in the wallet" number for every car I've owned. That's about the time every small system poops out and has to get replaced. After that it's been smooth sailing.
I bought my '00 max used in 03 with about 33K, it now has about 71.5K. The only problem I've had was the coils at about 65K.
I have the same concern.

187,000 miles on my '03. Second motor and second tranny. The only thing that actually looks like it has 187,000 miles on it is the steering wheel (rubbed the damn shiny stuff off the top of it!).
That said, DON'T BUY A HIGH MILAGE CAR UNLESS YOU LIKE TO WORK ON IT!!! I've done a ton of crap to mine just because stuff broke.

Other than that, she has 75k on her now and it's so far so good, except for a persistent clanking sound from the front end whenever I hit an abrupt bump. Changed the struts and it only made it worse, so I guess another trip to the dealer is in my future

101k. i have a small leak somewhere on the engine and transmission. replaced coil packs, maf, my rear calilper is seizing, o2 sensor gone bad just out of emissions warranty, thats about it. its not too bad. and btw, this didnt all happen at once. over the course of about 30k miles.
its a good car, just make sure you check faqs and search (using the info in the faq) for your cars problems.

Replace that before you have to replace everything, it sucks I know.
Ohh and a tip for EVERYONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If you guys go to Autozone, ask to see the prices in EVERY STORE, including the HUB store (usually the cheapest). You can save a whole bunch of money with price differences from stores in other regions, trust me I work there (sadly) and its saved me hundreds! Demand that price, they have to give it to you....just don't be an *** about it if you're in Wakefield, RI.

+1 to that. I had a 94 thunderbird with the 4.3 liter V8 in it. I babied that car never had the rpms past 4,000 n i did 3 trannies in that car in 3 years. the first two were covered but the third one wasn't so i fixed it n got rid of it. The ford AOD trannies from the 90's were F-Ing crap.
Srry for the rant. My 97 SE has 125,500 miles n my 2000 has 52,000 on the clock. Both run like they are Brand New. the 97 i did have to change the oil pressure switch, lil leak.

(btw, I was friggin' genius and waited until AFTER I bought the car to do the Carfax)
Despite its checkered past, my car has been fine other than some persistent trim rattles and a clanking sound from the front end whenever I hit a bump. Gonna get that checked out next week. It stinks, too, because I really want to do some mods but I just have a gut feeling that with 75k on the ticker I'm in for some major repair soon, and I can't afford that and mods
118000 on my 2001 SE. Radio volume button and Mass Airflow sensor died very early under warranty. ABS light comes and goes. So does the Check Engine Light. Gas tank is not pressurizing properly. Tried changing the gas cap twice. Helped for a bit but eventually came back. I just ignore both warning lights. Brake pads have a nasty habit of seizing to the rotors over night when wet. Annoying. Not a very refined ride. Put money into the basic service and maintenance. Otherwise, it has been a pretty sturdy car. But not sure if I would buy it again.
