Transmission poll

Basic non-scientific poll. 5th gens only (no 5.5 gens) with over 75K miles please.

I found a trans at a local junk yard. They won't sell me the extended 12/12 warranty on this tranny because they are "known to have problems" so I get a 30 day warranty and am not allowed to pay the extra $120 for the 12/12...
Just wanting to see the results.

Obviously this is a non-scientific poll. Fluid flushes, , etc are not being factored in here. Obviously on an enthusiest forum the driving habits tend to be a little more "spirited" than normal. I know this.

2000 GLE Auto 70K miles.. need a complete rebuild. (One of the planetary gears are busted.)
EDIT: Please post if you are auto or manual and what has been done to trans. I.E. Valve body, Complete rebuild, syncros, etc.

i am not sure what the poll is. I just replaced my trans due to the dealer not being able to diagnose why the seals were failing every 100 miles. My guess is the diff bearings. I think this is what youa re looking for is what problems people have had.

Bought an 02 in late 02 with 16K on the clock. Sold it middle of 05 with 98K and never had any tranny trouble. Just my experience.

They are known to go on the 5 speeds. Especially on the driver side shaft.
Can't be a bearing unless it has play noise or vibration. If all those ok then a new seal as it's easier than an overhaul.
Seals go at 100 miles. Just buy a ford or even toyota etc. They have a lifespam. Dirt on the edge of seal mating surface could cause a seal to fail. Many things.

2001 GLE auto 135K miles... no trans issues
Both previous owner and me have been rather light on the car. transmission oil flushed/changed regularly every 30K miles as per nissan maintenance schedule.

01 Auto AE 84K miles, replaced tranny in 9/2006 at 80K with a rebuilt tranny roughly 30k on rebuilt, covered under my extended 100k mile Nissan warranty. Runs like new again.

2001 i30.auto. 120,000 km (i dunno how much that translates to miles). Already had tranny rebuild at around 55,000 km. Tranny is starting to slip again, slightly. (under normal driving, my tranny feels like it drops into neutral for the shift from 1-2).

p.s. im an ******* of a driver. There is not a day where my car doesn't see WOT, unless its wet roads or snow.

you should state AT or MT..
i have MT, and my 1st gear synchro is real bad, so i drive in 2nd most of the time; other than normal clutch wear that needs replacement real soon, nothing other than that

01AE 5 speed with VLSD. Regular gear oil changes at 30K, use Amsoil. No problems so far at 130K miles. Busted the passenger side axle though.

2001 auto with 90,000 miles and my tranny is ok, but i noticed something and i'm not sure if it's normal. Sometimes when im accelerating hard, when the transmission shifts from 1st to 2nd gear at 5,000 rpms or above, it shifts kinda harshly... like you can feel whole car kinda jerk... is that normal?

p.s... it shifts smooth as butter when driving normally, and this high rpm jerk is only sometimes... i just got a tranny flush at about 83,000 miles too... normal?

First you don't rev that high in an auto , could do that occasionally in a manual but not an auto. You may be unconsiously giving the tranny its death if you rev so high!!!

2001 5-speed with 270k miles. No problems, unless you count finally having to replace the clutch last year.

5K RPM (redlining) is asking for trouble if done regularly.

The most conservative theory calls for never pushing more than 3K RPM on your engine, difficult to adhere to.....

2k GLE with A/T. Have not had to do any serious work on the tranny. The only thing I did and this was purely preventative, had nothing to do with reliability issues, was install a valvebody mod. with tranny cooler at 40K miles. I'm not at 140K miles and still running strong.

I've flushed the A/T system two times, once when I switched over to synthetic at 40K miles. The second time at 134K miles. Mobil 1 ATF has been very good to me.

yeah it really is.. lol.. i mean 5k is about 1500 rpms away from the redline so i figured i was safe.. nissan told me it was safe to rev it up when driving as long as it doesnt hit redline.. does anybody else take their autos up to 5,000 rpms? i'm really disappointed to hear this.. cause it's so fun.. lol

2000 SE with 205,000kms (not sure what it is in miles) No tranny issues with VB mod since summer/tranny cooler and other engine mods. Tranny runs like a champ still with no issues at all (knock on wood) and I rev it like a beatch but only once a week if that and tranny flushes every 2 years.

2 Things... how long do the clutches last on these cars? Like what miles did you 5 speed guys have it replaced at, under normal wear? I don't do burnouts or clutch drops but i'm at 103k and im wondering when its gonna go ya know? And maybe you guys are just talking about autos but if it was bad to rev past 5k wouldnt they have made the rev limiter at 5k instead of 6700? Also why would they put in a variable intake which gives you MORE power PAST 5000 rpm's?

1.)How long a clutch last depends on the driver.....
I have a co-worker who got 250,000 miles on his original clutch on a Cavalier...
In my teenage days, when I owned only manual transmission I never had a clutch last me over 75K miles.
2.)The rev limiter is high for many reasons. Weather the cars can "take the beating" or not is personal opinion.
It's common sence that revving the engine that high probably won't blow it immediately, It's also stupid to think that just because the engine cuts the injectors off @ 6700 RPM that it doesn't put extra wear and tear on it.... An engine that only sees 4000 and below after being broken in is going to last longer than an engine that sees WOT at every on-ramp, green light, etc.

2000 5spd 94K miles no problem untill I installed an ACT unsprung racing clutch. Busted the 3rd gear after a summer of racing. Stick to sprung clutches and this wont happen to you.
