From what I have read the Max ('00 or ' 02) on the highway should get in the upper 20's and lower 20's in the city, should it not?

That's right, although 25 mpg in town isn't out of the question if you're easy on it. I've gotten nearly 500 miles on a full tank before (all highway, of course), but my mixed driving is generally about 25/26 mpg. All things considered, I have no complaints about my max's gas mileage, nor does it bother me that prem fuel is recommended (I've just had to train my eyes to immediately go to the bottom of the sign at the gas station )

I get high teens to low 20's in the city, mid 20's on the highway.

Ultimately I would like a Pathfinder 4x4 adn I currently drive a V6 Frontier, but the gas mileage on a Maxima is really hard to ignore when I drive 30K+ miles a year.
If you get tinted, leather is no prob in summer... From what I saw on the org, 5.5 gen is about 10% worse than 5th gen in gas mileage... I too also put 30K+ a year down and can tell you that I don't drive the Max for its gas savings Although, I just completed a 400 mile trip and got 30 mpg but I wish I got that for my daily commute
