i have a 5.5 with the berk intake, that little "rod" that comes off the side of the intake and the hose connects to it from the engine block... i feel no suction or anything there, what exactly is this hose for? thanks

Make sure you connect it to your intake or otherwise you'll throw off your ECU. I learned my lesson. I ended up having to reset my ECU via how to's here.

so thats what its for, i had put a little breather there in its place until i finally got my Injen CAI now its got a hose never threw an engine light though

i didnt really like the hose on my injen , so i just took it off and put the lil air breather filter . i think it looks alil better then that hose just my 2cents.

I would suggest you put back the hose I think its got sumthing to do with the oil. I was working on my car one day with a friend folded to hose to get more room but forgot to straighten it back. I drove to work as soon as I got off the freeway I noticed the oil light flashing pulled into a gas station shut off the car opened the hood and straighten the hose then pulled the dip stick and it sound like the was air in there.which is due to the restriction in the hose. So disconnecting the hose is not a good idea.

i believe it is an oil breather hose. hence the "oil breather" mini filters that the hose is often replaced with.

NOT having the STOCK crankcase vent hose attached to the engine intake is in violation of the EPA regulations regarding auto pollution. You can do jail time! Hook it back up. Plus........ using the "filter" is aftermarket LAME and MICKEY MOUSE.

an air breather filter doesnt provide the vacuum needed...it doesnt serve a purpose at all (besides "looking cool")

Pulling your leg to some degree........but, practically for our cars, removing the crankcase vent hose from the intake can create performance issues as alluded to by someone prior, because the MAF is not sensing the air WHEN this air is entering the intake (downstream of the TB) via the PCV valve. This air supply is actually originating from the crankcase vent, which is normally supplied by air from the intake "air box". (It will have no affect when the normal "backflow" of crankcase vapors/blowby occurs at or near WOT.)
