Strange smell from the engine!?
#1
My 2k Max has 17,500 miles on it. Today I was cruisin on the highway when a jetta decided to tailgate me. I nailed the gas and when i looked down i was doing 120mph. I slowed down to about 75mph and almost Immediately there was a strange odor, i fishy smell. Is this normal?? I always put 92 octane but i'm not sure where the smell is coming from. Can anyone shed some light on this??
Thanx

I don't know what a fishy smell would mean... if it's closer to rotten eggs that usually means the cat is going bad. On a very old car we lost some plastic thing under the hood and it smelled awful when it melted against the exhaust manifold... shot in the dark though.

Driving through Indiana, it becomes immediately obvious that some farmer fertilized his field. (Either that or your passenger really needs to get his/her flatulence looked into... )
Under certain conditions, there can be a big alewife killoff in Lake Michigan, and you can smell them from LSD when driving by the lake.
So the smell could have come from the environment, not your max.

But I really haven't noticed that in my Max. Not like the GM's or the Ford I've owned before. When getting on the expressway, I'd floor it, and by the time I hit 70, the vents would be blowing warm, humid air...
I like my max...

I usually drive with the A/C on and I have noticed when I hit the pedal hard to pass someone I get a quick wiff of some stale air. It happens everytime. Since it happens everytime I figure it is normal. I figured it was the increase of gasoline burning off.

A true story. While operating an old 28' cabin crusier in the Los Angeles harbor (dirtiest harbor on the planet) our engine (327, single screw) started to over heat. Back in the slip we removed an inspection cover on the intake manifold and found some mysterious fabric inside the engine. Upon pulling this stuff out it had elastic in it and it came out like a rubber band, spraying my friend in the face with real nasty engine coolant/bildge water. We soon discovered our raw water pickup (water source for the engine) had sucked up somebodies BVDs (underware) and they got clogged inside the engine.
Quiet hilarious, except for the guy who got hit in the face with this crud.
My point is that maybe your car's intake ingested some ripe panties and thus the fishy odor.
