LED Tails - Done with Pics

Finally got both taillights done...they looks awesome, definately worth the time invested in making them. Already got a customer who wants a set for his GTO.

For full light coverage and look, it took 64 leds for the parking/brake, and 36 for the signal for each taillight!

Do you have a write-up? Notes/website? I'm in the buying/planning stage right now and have 100's of Super-flux LEDs.

I assume you did yellow/orange LEDs for the blinkers?

Did you use two PWM's on each taillight, so 4 total?

Unfortunately the write up would have to be extremely detailed to have a noob start this project and understand exactly what's going on. You're best source for information is hidplanet.com/forums. I only used two PWMs, for each taillight, for using the LED array for the brakes and signal, I didn't use a PWM for the signals. I also used the Lumiled LEDs which are slightly different from the normal LEDs you see around here. These are the LEDs that are used in auto applications, like the Caddy, Infiniti tails, etc...

I have a night shot but they just don't do them justice. I just uploaded a night shot to the album linked above...you have zoom in to see the detail using the zoom button(it will auto sharpen...lovin google )

The pictures probably make it seem that way, but with the PWM, the brightness is adjustable...which I can do by just opening the truck and turning a ****.

They don't really glare at all, the brightness is identical to the new cadillac, infiniti, honda tails...

I'll try get brake pics posted.

Very nice! Can you make some for me? Too bad I'm in Cleveland or I would like to come see them in person.

BTW the turn signal pics don't work:

If you can make these economically, you could make a ton of cash

Those look great!
LEDs shouldn't glare at all really, unless you have some 3w LEDs in there...

PWMs are great, but sometimes the "trail" you see when you look away can get annoying to me.

I'm working on my tails soon too, but I'm going to use some current regulating LM317's.

Yours look REALLY nice, they look OEM like it came out of the factory!

Yep after I installed them I took my car to the dyno...I had a huge gain of zero horsepower.

On a more serious note...
As for building them for the orgers, I'm willing and am reevaluating how I can drive down cost and reduce time spent in fabricating. The man issue is the amount of LEDs used, 64 lumileds for each brake light, and 32 lumileds for each signal, we're talking 192 leds for both lights and these aren't your traditional LEDs so the cost per LED is higher. But before I even go through the trouble of pricing is there any interest?

If I had a Maxima, I'd probably be all over this.

Just wondering, how much are you paying per LED for the LumiLEDs, I'm starting a project myself.

As for driving costs down, it's going to be pretty hard considering LED tails require a lot of custom work. Including the tail lights themselves...

Per his avatar, yes, Ohio, but per his license plates, NJ, so I was curious if he's ever local.

It would be possible, but the 00-01 tails are clear lensed so to get a uniform look I used more LED's to get the line look. If you want I could try...can't guarantee the final appearance.

As for where I am I'm in Cincy right, i'm still NJ plated as my family lives here qnd I once did. Moving(company) a lot but keeping the plates until I settle...maybe ATL next.

00MaxSE...let me know if you're interested. As it would be the quickest to turn it around cuz youre up the road.

sweetjackal82...do you sell lumileds? If so shoot me a PM.

I'll try post some pics of the custom circuit board I made for these in a about a week.

dremel...baking won't do anything unforunately. Using the right dremel bit you have to go around and cut the lense off. This process takes a lot of time and patience. I tested on two different test taillights before I cut my lights open.

you need to incorporate washer nozzles into the tail light to blast tailgaters with a fresh shot of ammonia.

This way I have it setup allows the use of the same LED bulb to be used as the parking and the brake for the whole circuit. This similar to other luxury cars you see on the road so there will be clear distinction between brake and parking light. I could reduce the amount of LED bulbs i guess by eliminating rows or spacing the bulbs out more.

I posted this video early but it might be clearer to see it....

Nice job. Would like to see more pics... and possibly some kind of overview of the process would be cool. I'm sure others are thinking the same.

Have you thought of making a mold, and pouring your own back piece of the tail lights? There's good info on doing it... working with plastics and molds. Could duplicate the factory piece but modified for the leds... just a though... if you plan on doing more.

I was wanting to do something similar, but I want to change the whole lighting style. My vision was red center and an orange circle around the red for the blinkers. That would be sick I think.

Keep up the good works
