What kind of clutch to get?
What kind of clutch to get?
What kind of clutches do you guys replace on your 5.0-5.5 gen after the OEM wears out? I'm not running nitrous or boost or any huge power adders, just a 2.5" catback and probly plan to add a y-pipe and intake etc- do you go OE thaor like use a duralast from autozone? they are around $114, i bet the dealer costs a lot more than that but who else makes a decent clutch, anybody? i'm at 103k, dont burn it out all the time but i've taught more than a few people to drive stick on my car, so im getting prices and options for now.
Check on the price of a stock unit from the dealer. Call Dave B. to see about getting a price. It's a lot of work changing out a clutch so it may be worth spending a little more for the right part. I think the stock clutches are pretty reasonable.
Whatever you get just make sure the disk is sprung. I bought an ACT clutch that was unsprung, and caused my 3rd gear to break after a summer of hard runs. Even though your Maxima isn't boosted, it still will wear your gears out. Also, an unsprung clutch will be harsh. By harsh, I mean everytime you get off the clutch, the car will vibrate out of control.

i would get oem. if im not mistaken, they should be cheaper than most aftermarket clutches (maybe about the same price as oe replacement). the stock clutch is guaranteed to be good for everyday driving + reliability + you know how to drive with it. if you're happy with the stock clutch, i wouldn't explore new options. i wish i didn't.
Now, this is coming from someone who had a clutch on his last car, so listen to these guys who speak about the Maxima aftermarket clutch. I have a new transmission on its way and with that I decided to upgrade the clutch / flywheel. I have a fidanza Flywheel coming in on order and decided to go with SPEC Stage 2 clutch. It was a toss up between Centerforce Dual Friction (Had on my last car), CM or Spec, decided to go Spec. The reason everyone is saying stay stock is because the engagement on the clutch itself is harsher the higher the chain you go. Now, if you want a performance clutch, don't mind to spend the money, and want a stock feel get Centerforce Dual Friction (Had it on my 93 Probe GT and it felt stock as could be). I went Stage 2 because this is a brand new transmission, I don't want to take the transmission out again to put a better clutch on later and I plan to boost my maxima when / if a kit is ever made. It really is a personal choice. No matter which route you take break the clutch in or you will regret it whether aftermarket or OEM.

Yeah, get the OEM clutch.
Brian is the owner of Cattman Performance and Dave Burnette is a parts guy at Southpoint Nissan in TX.
