2000 Fuel woes
2000 Fuel woes
Hey guys, last thing i need is to get flamed, so please don't do so.
Yes i know that there's been many fuel consumption threads, but im just so frustrated. I know it's a V6, i also know it's not a Civic, but with my consumption this high, maybe there's something i'm missing.
Here's a bit on my car, and what I've done recently.
-It's a 2000 Maxima SE A/T, 130,XXX miles
-NGK spark plugs done 2 months ago
-Ran seafoam through the crankcase/brake booster/gas tank about 2 months ago
-Brand new motormaster Air Filter
-Brand new Tranny from Nissan
-Coils nor MAF have ever been changed (as far as i know)
City driving with the car i'll get roughly 15-17mpg (15l/100km) and i'm very easy on the gas, hardly ever taking her above 2,800rpm
Higway driving is about 20-21mpg, going about 70-75mph.
Now i know for a fact that this is very low compared to what i have read in other posts from Maxima drives. Trust me i really do not expect super high mpg cause like i stated, this is a V6 beast and not a Civic, but my numbers are really low.
I'm really hoping that some of you can give me a hand or steer me in the right direction.
Please don't flame me, im only here looking for a little help.
Thanks

Thats what I get. I didn't realized until recently how much the weather has to do with our mpg. I took a trip to Tennesse last year and with driving hard, I got 22-23 mpg roughly and 25-26 with highway. Up here in Boston, i get the same mpg you do. I've accepted it.
Many factors.
Do you use ethanel? (Ethanel doesn't save any money, only helps the environment/economy)
Winter blend makes a difference
You need to check your fuel trims. Without knowing where your fuel trims are you can't say what the problem is. You may be running rich or your 02's may not be switching properly. Do you get the sulfer smell alot(rotten eggs)??
If you are running rich, it can be from many different things. MAF, MAP, TPS, Spark, EGR, Exhaust leak, even your ECT sensor reading to cold can make you burn rich.

There's a lot of things to look at. Damn, and no i don't get that rotten egg smell.
I mean checking for all those things could cost a LOT of money, and not worth the actual 2-3mpg increase it might cause.
Maybe i'll start off by getting the injectors cleaned... See where that takes me. What can i actually check myself?

Did you check the tire pressure? I had a tire that had a slow leak in it. I was getting about 19-22 mpg. Once I got it fixed and the pressure stayed the same, I consistently got 24-25mpg(Altima not Maxima).
i guess i can start off by cleaning my injectors at Nissan...
About faulty injectors, wouldn't i be throwing a CEL if that were the case?
Also wouldn't dirty injectors restrict the gas flow resulting in better fuel economy? (i know it sounds stupid)

my city/hwy is about 15-17 too but i don't care anymore. i've learn to just deal with it and not worry about it too much. but just this past week i've been driving hwy a lot more and i got 18.5mpg and i got so excited
but ya just deal with it =/
